Arma III is out now, at least the Alpha is. They are releasing the Alpha version as a means of community testing/feedback, but are letting EVERYONE in on it. Once you pay for the Alpha, you get the game when the full version comes out as well. BIS continues to amaze me with their business model.

I really wish I could like Arma. I have operation arrowhead. Just can't get used to playing games with a keyboard and mouse. Oh well. Back to MLB 13 The Show Arma does not implement keyboard/mouse well, its a clusterfuck of keys. I can't play games on PC for this very reason. If I have to look down to do something, then the system isn't very intuitive. |
|
I picked it up this morning luckily. From what I have seen so far playing is that it is an amazing game so far. The graphics are amazing and the game is much more refined and less clunky than ARMA 2. I will admit there have been a few bugs of course, but it is Alpha. |

Holy cow that looks beautiful. But I couldn't imagine trying to work all the commands to make my movements seem fluid. |

If you actually learn to play the game you'll find which are the most commonly used and adapt your controls according to your taste. And fuck yeah I got alpha access. Gonna play the shit out of it, but first I must remap to RDGF controls

I will admit there have been a few bugs of course, but it is Alpha. My first impression was that the movements seemed like a VAST improvement over previous versions. After years of bitching, they finally bridged the gap between COD-like smooth movement and their clunky, erratic movement. This means CQB and PvP should be much much better. Previously, I've played MP against AI, but this may change now. |

The control scheme just doesn't work for me Yeah, when I was a kid I was big into PC games. Especially Deus Ex, Rainbow Six, and Ghost Recon. What an amazing game those were. Maybe its just because I had so many years between pc games...I don't know. But when I played Arma 2 Arrowhead(which I trully wanted to love soooo bad) it just felt so clunky, and I had to keep looking down at my keyboard for mundane, basic commands. Like I said, maybe I just got used to playing games with joysticks, where the movement just felt more realistic to me. And Call of Duty sucks. The only console shooters I liked were the simulation type, like Rainbow Six, where you had to really plan out your moves. Far Cry is good too. I even tried to use a controller on my computer to play Arma...but you could tell it wasn't designed for it. Very clunky. Oh well. If they made a somewhat simplified one for console I would be all over it. It is possible to make a deep, realistic combat sim with simpler controls. But I guess its different strokes for different folks. The pc vs. console debate could go on just as long as the .45 vs 9mm debate. It's really a matter of personal preference. |

Glad to hear some of the comments about how the movement has been polished up to be less clunky. I do however wish BIS would offer a version without steam. I so hate that pos and its lousy support. speaking of steam they really need to release Grim Fandango. I have been saying that for years. I know my inner nerd prolly makes me an outcast of afrcom...but I LOVE old school point and click adventure games...and that is apparently the best. |

Best of both worlds. It won't help with the clunky ArmA interface, but it will for most other games. |

Don't take yer undies off just yet. I take back everything I said about the clunky part. It seemed done really well in the first mission I played for 10min earlier today. But when I opened up the editor and decided to goof around on the airfield, I found that it's every bit as clunky as the previous ARMAs. Still can't do fine movements quickly, still can't negotiate a staircase or walk on top of a building without almost falling off. Basically, as I've seen it right now, it's nothing different than ARMA II, except for some new vehicles, graphics, and an underwater element that I haven't tried. Still one of the best games out there concerning strategy and unit tactics. Still sucks at anything resembling CQB. |

Finally tried it out.
I'm running on an Alienware M17x with Intel Core duo 4 core with dual GTX 260M graphics cards. I've been having a problem with my laptop shutting down after 2 minutes of game play on low quality graphics setting. So I tore my laptop down and cleared out 4 years worth of dust and put some new thermal compound of the graphic cards and the CPU. I'm running it in very high quality graphic settings now with no issues. Can't wait until they release the jets. |
|
I have a 6 core i7 at 3.2ghz and 2 gtx 570's superclocked to 795. The co-op runs amazing, everything cranked up and running at 60fps with rare drops to high 40s. Im thinking saweet, now lets try the multiplayer. Joined a server with 40 people in it and noticed my fps was at 40-50 range. Well after about 20 minutes of gameplay the server filled up to 60 and my fps was limping along in the 20's range!! |
