Okay GD, I want to spend some money, say no more than about $125, on a good all around hawk.  I'll use it for general camp stuff, fire prep and such, I may even throw it a little.

I already have a Trail Hawk, Vietnam Hawk and Rifleman's Hawk from Cold Steel, and a GB Wildlife hatchet.

I want something that'll hold up to real use, but at the same time one that I'm not scared to use and beat on.  I'd prefer either a hammer poll, or no poll at all.  I'm not really into to spike polls for outdoor use, though they have their place for digging.

So, what says the Hive?

define "real use".

I love hawks, but if you are going to be chopping wood and such, its probably just better to go ahead and get a dedicated hatchet or axe.

There are some hand made ones on ebay, made from rail road spikes.  They look sweet.

ETA: the ones i wss talking about are not listed right now.

Real use for me means gathering and prepping fire wood, pounding tent stakes, maybe even cleaning game and other food prep.

I'm drunk, and fuck you, also look at SOG tech fusions, for your price range get two. Don't throw them. For a bit more money, and I think it's worth it, look at RMJ forge and bench made.

I used to have a hard on for a hawk.  Main prolblem with most on the market is a reverse spike.  If u actually full speed spar, you will get hit by your own rear spike, it is just too chaotic.

They are better for throwing, the ones with the spikes in the vietnam style , but a thrown hawk is pretty effective regardless of its design.  Even if u miss it is likely to make them duck.

All in all, i have concluded, same as james k , that the large bowie type is better than hawk for fighting.  Limitation of the hawk is that it requires more room to use it to effect.  W a bowie with an acute point you can always stab if u cant hack.

Axes have more field uses than a bowie though, particularly ehen combined with one or two field type knives

Why don't you think your Rifleman's Hawk will stand up to "real use"?  I used the shit out of mine before I realized a $15 Fiskars hatchet was lighter and more useful for what I was using it for.

Everything you said you have in your OP looks like decent shit. Spend that money on canned goods and trioxane if you want to prep.

Estwing for camping.
Or helko, even better.

For tomahawk stuff, breaching, etc. smith and wesson is built like a tank, around $75

Amazing craftsmanship with these guys.  I don't think they are even taking orders at this point they are so overwhelmed with the response.

Oh, it will, but I'm looking to upgrade some, kinda like how my CRKT Drifter will cut everything I want it to, but I bought a Benchamde after a while.  Dig?

backpacking or camping?

Next time I go backpacking I'm going to take along my CS trail hawk...though I never carried an axe before.  Will have to see if I find it worth the extra weight.

If camping (aka, not much hiking involved), I'd get a hatchet or even an axe.  You'll appreciate the extra weight over a hawk if you are trying to cut/split allot of wood.

Cleaning game and food prep with a hawk? Well, I've never done it.  I'd rather just use a knife.  In my mind its going to end up being allot easier even if you can take the head of the hawk off and use it as an impromptu knife.  I'd rather carry a good knife than a "jack of all trades" tomahawk.

In my mind my hawks are for:

1) Light weigh substitutes for axes in cases where light weight and or ability to break it down is an advantage.

2) Fighting zombies.

In any other role its a compromise.

Waaay back around 1969, when I was a boy scout, I saved up my lawn mowing money and bought a shiny double-headed tomahawk with a hickory handle. It was beautiful and I Really Wanted It! I remember drooling over it for almost a year before I bought it.

The back blade was a spike, the front blade was a short arc.  Fucker was sharper than hell and I was a little scared to use it, but I eventually got halfway proficient at sticking it in things from a distance.

Great fun. Had a nice leather scabbard that I tooled.    All my friends wanted to "borrow" it.  Wish I could find a picture.  It was very very shiny.   All in all, an excellent toy for a 6th grader.

eta:

almost exactly like this, but very finely finished, smooth, silvery and shiny.  100% same shape.

The SOG models with the hollow handle are out.  Anything from United Cutlery should be out out of hand.  Cold Steel has good enough beaters.

IIRC RMJ forge and the like run around $400, so looks like a few Cold Steel Hawks are in your future.

I haven't looked lately, but Target used to sell SOG hawks for very decent prices. I own a SOG, couple of Cold Steels, and a LaGana Tactical Tomahawk. My favorite is a Cold Steel that received some custom work from a member of Bladeforums.
