Probably another pie in the sky engine prototype, but an interesting idea. Just use high grade ceramics that operate just fine at combustion temperatures, and forego cooling completely on the engine. The additional heat in the combustion chamber burns fuel more completely and with less parasitic loss from running a cooling system.

If it needs no cooling, then they should have replaced the prop with a weight.  That prop moves a considerable amount of air around that engine.

Someone should forward this to Mazda.

Not a bad idea, wonder what the cost comparison is compared to standard motor would be and the longevity of it.

These things never go anywhere, though. Neat idea, though.

They have been talking about ceramic plane engines for a long time. They just haven't completely figured out how to keep them from "breaking" catastrophically when  they fail.

That would probably explain the prop on the engine since it has been in discussion for a plane engine for some time.

They've also been talking about running engines made of conventional materials at much higher temperatures. Several decades ago, GM was toying with the idea in automobiles, as a means of improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.

I seem to remember problems with getting enough air in the engine (hot air is less dense) and the occasional "out of battery" combustion.

Ford made a Lima Block I4 with a composite block and head back in the 80s.

If anything, a Rotary should be simpler due to the lower combustion pressures.

Ever tried changing piston rings on a rotary engine?  Easier maintenance my ass, worst repair job I've ever had to do

Apex seals, not rings.  Rotors, not pistons.  Yes, they are a bitch and when you burn the chrome plating, the seals wear out rapidly.

Since the Germans developed it and the Japanese refined it, they still can't get the Wankel rotary engine to work right.

When I was a kid I worked for a vinyl top install shop. One of our regular customers was the Mazda dealer across the river. I got to go ferry the brand new Mazdas to the shop, install the top, and return them to the dealership.

Those Wankel rotary engines ran like a scalded ass ape....very fast. I always wondered why they didn't catch on more than they did.

Can you even buy a vehicle with a rotary engine these days?

Discontinued. I had an rx8 and an Rx7

Wankels are fun but man they burn the gas!

Rx9 in 2017 is coming out.  Proper return to a two seater sports car to compete with the boxster.

I got 26 miles to gallon on my trip to texas.  Daily though is only 19.7.  They are not an economy car.

Putting a Rotary in a Mid Engine Two Seater would probably be a good idea.  Surprised Mazda didn't do it sooner.

Probably be a front engine.  I wish they would come out with a mid-engined tri-rotor to compete with Lamborghini and Ferrari like the Furai Concept they had.

I had an 86 that I sold a couple years ago with 86k on it.

It was actually pretty quick for no turbo. Ill get another one one day.

Personally, I would rather see a smaller Two Rotor Unit in a Mid Engined Two Seater than a larger unit in a Front Engined car.

The Free Revving/No Low End Torque power delivery of the Rotary is more suitable in a lighter car than a GT.

Something like the old MR2 with a Two Rotor Engine and a sub 3000lb curb weight would be the ticket.
