I found this wrench on road this morning. I can't get the screw out that holds the worm in. You guys know a trick or what I am missing?

It's a crescent tool co brand.

Go to Lowe's. Buy a new one. Throw the old one away.

why do you need to get it out?

I want to clean it up. It is dirty as all hell. Its an 18 inch wrench and a little hard to just buy another one. The one to the left of it is an 8 inch I also found.

Or carb and choke cleaner.  Soak a bit, then Q-tips in and out.  It'll work.

I can feel the screw is backed out of the threads. It is loose but won't pull out.

Hose it down with something like PB Blaster. Looks like you pliers could use some oil too.

Just looked at mine. It is staked in place.

Soak in oil and scrub with a wire brush, then use it.

Just soak that bitch in mineral oil for a week, wipe it off and use it.

When I find a road warrior needing cleaning, I stick it in a 1/2 bottle of ATF fluid.  One week later a little brass brushing, and it works like new.

I just blasted it with carb cleaner. What's ATF fluid? Is it like automatic transmission fluid?

Yep, a 50 50 mix of automatic transmission fluid and acetone is the best penetrating juice out there!

Pic of the offending screw. I would like to get it out since after carb cleaner it is still gritty and dirty.

Yeah, it knocked off a lot of the grime but the crud is still in there.
Also hit it with oil and a wire brush before blasting all the grime off.

Thanks for the link but I'm not into huffing.

The screw turns freely, just won't come out. I even used my best pair of rusty pliers.

Hmmm.
I just grabbed one of my newer crescent wrenches and that screw wont come out of mine either.....

The end is probably peened over so it doesn't fall out.

Don't sweat it; use the little straw on a can of carb cleaner and spray it out.  No real need to completely disassemble it.

Then tighten the screw and  oil it up and put it to work.

ETA: I tried to do like the OP with an ancient Crescent pattern wrench that I found in the road (best I could tell is it was late '40s, forget the brand)  and also couldn't get it apart.  Cleaned up, dressed the jaws a bit with a file (it was *really* well used) and it's fine to this day.  That was 20 years ago.

That's where I am at now. I just wanted to get it in tip top shape. I need it to try and remove some locking lugs off my miata I lost the key to

WTF does it matter if he used carb cleaner? It's nearly the same shit as brake cleaner. Oh wait, it's not a brake either, can't use it. Better not use ATF since it's not a transmission either.

How would that get a supposedly peened screw out? The company sells a replacement jaw so I would think that screw comes out. It's probably my new join date, low post count and lack of membership.

You know I drove through Tennessee today and lost one of my 18" crescent wrenches....

But really I would soak it in something you have on hand for a few days then just work the worm gear back and forth until it loosens up. If the screw is just spinning in place its unlikely you will be able to get it out w/o needing to replace it.

Heh heh, don't worry about it....

BTW, Mine is indeed peened/staked.

Get lube on it and use patience.  Wiggle the parts.  Check for retention.  I've had one apart, but I don't recall the make.

[#37]
Try pulling down on the adjustment screw (toward handle) while pulling the retaining screw, I think they are spring loaded to hold the adjustment screw tight against the adjustable jaw.

[#38]
Don't worry about disassembling it.  Drop it in ATF and let it soak for a bit,  pull it out and run the worm all the way one direction, soak it some more,  run the work the other way, and let it soak.  It will loosen up.  ATF is one of the best cleaning and lubricating fluids you can find.  Just don't use it on newer ratchets with plastic parts.

Victory is mine! (with your help). looked at it again tonight and found the almost impossible spot that was peened. 30 sec with a round file and the screw came out. Thanks for all your help.
