I made an invitation in Photoshop with a size of 5x7.  It looks fine on the monitor, though holding a ruler to the monitor actually shows 4x5.5 even when the zoom is at 100%.  Why is the picture grainy when I had it printed at 5x7?

What looks grainy? Graphic or text?  Remember, screen resolution < printer resolution.

Everything is grainy.  Photos and text.

If you look at the document properties in PhotoShop, what are the DPI/size?

DPI must be above 200 for such a print

You can't measure off the monitor.
The dpi should be set to 300. All imported images should be as large as possible ie. importing a 32k, 72 dpi image and blowing it up to 5x7 will not work.
My guess is you have the doc set to 72 dpi at 5x7.

You guys are right.  The dpi was 72/inch.  I blew it up to 300 and the image is now huge on the screen, but when I print it it still 5x7.

Thanks!

Do you have anything else to lay it out in? PS is not the first/best choice for laying out invites in. And upping the resolution may or may not help- is the text a Smart Object?

Holy crap, that made me laugh.

ETA: sorry dude, I'm not trying to be a dick, I understand what you were thinking

The text is from the text tool.  I brought the pictures in at 300 instead of 72 and they looked much better.  Oh, and even though the image is much larger now it is still 5x7 on the Photoshop ruler, but much larger on mine!

This is my wife's and my attempt at creativity and saving a little money.  $8 to print 20.
