Question regarding Insulin.

I was started on Lantus in early Dec. I am taking 10 units once a day. First bottle lasted me till today. As I am opening a new one, I notice the bottle says discard after 28 days. Is it OK to use longer if kept refrigerated? I looked on the net and saw everything from use only 28 days to use till bottle is empty if kept cool, to use 28 days only if bottle is removed from frige.

Always keep insulin in the fridge unless specifically stated otherwise on the package.

Once opened insulin has a shelf-life.

I believe decreased effectiveness and possible contamination are the two main reasons. However, I could be making it up.

IIRC, as long as it has been refrigerated the entire time, you usually have 2-3 months to use it past the expiration date.

The worst thing that can happen is it won't work. However, that means bad things for you.

Not a doctor here, but I would make a quick call to the local Rx and ask, just in case.

There are a few diabetes websites out there, so do some research too.

Be safe!

ICU RN check in: We use them for the month and they are not refrigerated. We use the following vial, I don't know if we throw them out because of effective date or because they are easily accessible.

28 days once tapped whether in the fridge or not....untapped it is good until the expiration date on the bottle as long as you keep it at the correct temp

Consider getting pens instead as they are only 3ml (300units) per cartridge as compared to10ml (1000units) per vial..there are 5 cartridges per box and you can store the unused ones in the fridge.....

We use them for 28 days after opening in the hospital, and the vials stay in the reefer.  That's just our policy, but I believe you can use them until empty as long as you keep them in the fridge.

Just got off the phone with the pharmacy for my hospital and they say soon as you use it you have 28 days. if you have one it in your fridge unopened you can store it until the manufacture expiration date.

Had you noticed any problems with symptoms or low/high glucometer readings? If not, I'd bet you're good if stored properly.

My hospital uses insulin pens (Lantus & Humalog) so I'm not familiar w the vials.

Even better news. That will make my life easier working up on the slope. No need to find a place to keep it cool outside my room.

Thanks again.

IIRC Lantus is one of those new fancy-schmancy insulins that don't have to be refrigerated like older kinds. Refrigeration helps, but it isn't necessary.

room temp only.....don't leave it in your car or someplace warm; never let it freeze....you would be surprised at how quickly heat causes insulin to break down....

If you are dosing once daily with glargine for your basal rate, why do you carry it with you?

eta: do you have a rapid acting analog that you use prior to meals?
