I some times use a mixture of Dexron III ATF and canola.
Cheap, and very effective. I have tested it downt to 10 degrees. Due to global warming, it has not gotten any colder than that around here. It is still thin at that low temperature. It does not seem to be prone to oxidizing/gumming, like some oils do. Some feel it is too thin, but most store bought CLP is about the same consistency. If a thicker oil is wanted, just add a little thicker oil. |

Just look up "Ed's Red." Been using it since my grandfather taught me the recipe as a kid in the 70's. I mix up about a gallon a year. Equal parts kerosene, mineral spirits, acetone and ATF.
Ballistol at the range, ER when I get everything back on the bench at home. |

I will mix up some eds red at some point, but I have some Kroil at the moment |

I'm beginning to appreciate the value-for-dollar of mineral spirits and brake cleaner for cleaning. I'm also trying out ATF/motor oil and moly grease for lube. The FP10 smells nicer, but allergy season is coming up anyway - I won't smell anything for 6 months. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I some times use a mixture of Dexron III ATF and canola. Dexron by itself is pretty good - Why would you want to gum it up with Canola oil? Dexron is pretty good by itself. Canola does not gum up much, it does not oxidize much, at least not when mixed with the Dexron. I have left samples exposed to open air for months at a time, and I have not noticed any gumming. Canola is a GM rapeseed oil, and rapeseed oil was once used as a lubricant for steam engines. I am not a tribologist, and don't play one on TV, but this simple, cheap mixture works pretty well. Obviously, any oil can gum up under some conditions, but the Dexron/canola mixture works pretty well, at least for a 2 year period. It is also sustainable and environmentally friendly, (the canola part anyway). |
