Too small. Can't read anything on it. Not the first time I heard that... Try This ONe one for size... |

Wow! That's a whole lot of very expensive cable. Check out the interactive map link: http://submarine-cable-map-2013.telegeography.com/ You can zoom in and see individual cable routes and names. |

What is scarey is how many of them go thru the Gulf of Aden past Yemen into the Red Sea. If the terrorists really wanted to do some damage they could just drag anchor thru there. Cable snags happen. A lot. Usually the impact is minimal as service is rerouted. There were a few well publicized incidents in 2008 though. |

Are these cables laying on the ocean floor or are they suspended at a certain depth?
not really that funny smartass, go be a prick somewhere else, this thread is for nice people curious about telecom. Hey prick, go be an asshat somewhere else. You're certainly not one of the nice people, if you even know anything about telecom. |

My dad made a run on the Cable Ship Long Lines when they ran TAT-7. I was able to get a brief walkaround tour of the deck when it came back in. http://wpcore.wpe.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Global-Marine-Energy-300x260.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8040/8017816782_c88e253a9c_z.jpg She was quite a beast. thats damn cool, I remember seing this ship in Honolulu harbor when I was a kid |

Are these cables laying on the ocean floor or are they suspended at a certain depth? http://i664.photobucket.com/albums/vv5/sizeNstrength/perplexedjoker.jpg Yeah I was serious. I've never read up on any of this stuff. If they are on the floor, do thermal vents damage the cable, or seismic events such as rock slides? How are they repaired? I didn't realize a requirement of GD is to be knowledgeable on ocean cables... |

I didn't realize a requirement of GD is to be knowledgeable on ocean cables... Cable route avoids areas that would cause damage. Extra length is provided to prevent tensile loading, for example S bends. Cables are repaired by pulling the break to the surface. Either snagging or remote operated vehicle are used to bring the break to the surface for repair. Cable tracking is done using either injected tone, magnetic anomaly detectors or metal detector type instruments. Some detecting equipment is mounted on the ROV. Many times, cables are buried below the sediment to protect from trawlers or small anchors. These are uncovered using jetting equipment. Basically, a pressure washer on the ROV is used to uncover the cable. |

Here's some interesting info I read up on a while back. It has the specs for some of the cables. Just interesting info in general.
