I have a Yard Man riding mower with a 12.5 HP Briggs.
It's only about 15 months old. I use it year round & keep up the maintenance myself. This morning when I checked the oil I found that all the gas I had in the gas tank had gone into the oil tank. I only had about 1-1/2 quarts of gas in it when I used it last. What in the &$(*#@ would cause the gas to transfer to the oil tank ?? What problem does it have & what is the solution ? . |

The most likely cause is a leaking or stuck float valve in the carburetor.
Fuel can leak past the valve overfilling the float bowl, up and into the venturi, then flowing past a open intake valve and into the cylinder. Enough of a build up and it leaks past the rings into the crankcase and mixes with the oil. Sounds like a carb clean or rebuild is in order. Do not try to start the engine with the contaminated fuel/oil mix.

Probably a stuck carb float. Buy a carb rebuild kit and dig in. Was the fuel cock turned off? Most newer mowers do not have a cock (fuel shut off). I got some from Amazon for $3.50 each and added them to the fuel lines on all my gas motors. The gasahol sold now really screws up small carbs. When I am done mowing, I shut the fuel off and let the engine run till it starves. |
| Sounds like you got some crud in the float needle. The old mowers used to just leak onto the ground, and you could see it and do something about it. EPA figures it's better to have your motor blow up then kill a bit of grass. Clean your carb or rebuild it. Sometimes a small hardware store owner will do it for $30 or so. |
| I presume this engine has a more-or-less standard carburetor setup. I that case it usually means the carburetor float is stuck in the open position. Usually the fuel on a briggs is gravity feed (tank higher than the engine) and lacking a petcock will flow through the carb into the engine. Change the oil, give the carburetor a sharp rap with something like a plastic hammer and see if that clears it. If it's going to be an ongoing problem you'll have to find out why the float is sticking. What's your warranty situation on the unit? |
