Going to be 39 in a few months... Used to be pretty fit, race quads, ride mountain bikes.... Gained 25lbs over the summer just hit a lazy spell... Fuck has it been hard to get motivated to get back into shape - usually I have no prob doing a round of P90x and shedding the flab, but this time I just want to eat and sit... middle age? How the hell to get motivated? I am fat and old and I am dissapoint.

start swimming, cycling and jogging.
now sign u for a triathlon. you need motivation to work out, not just to stay fit. sign up for races/events. it FORCES you to work out then. or prove that you are worthless and have paid to do an event but not show due to your inability to properly train for it. ![]()

Cut out most carbs (sugar and starch), replace volume with protein (meat and cheese). That will drop 20 to 30 lbs pretty quick. By replace volume with meat and cheese.......Do you mean the volume of carbs (sugar and starch) you were taking? Also how long before the body adjusts to lack of soda water and french fries? Serious Q I need to get off the Dr pepper and other bad crap. |

Motivation is not a necessity. I have a training schedule. Sometimes when the hour rolls around and I don't feel like training I can easily talk myself out of going. The solution is to get up and just go through the motions. It's easy, you just stand up and walk over to your gym bag. Don't think about it, just get up and go through the motions. Pretty soon you'll be in your car, on the way to the gym, and then you're there!

I'm in my early 40's and am starting to feel the same way as OP. Next dr visit, I'm having mine checked. |

Winter is a "slow" time for mostly everyone. But, after realizing I had to hold my breath at 40 to tie my shoes, I said enough. http://scoobysworkshop.com/ I lost close to 40lbs in 3 months following Scoobys lead, and that guy is over 50. Your motivation comes from within, and when 20 somethings with daddy issues begin to be smitten with your looks - you know you're on the right track. Even if the wife disapproves of your followers ![]() |

I remember when I hit the 3 F's. Forty, Fat and Flabby. Part of getting older is realizing that life is not really about the material things. Amongst those are energy and vitality. It gets harder as you get older and the best is to stay healthy and try and be like you were when you were 22. There are more important things in life besides being young, strong and having lots of energy. Focus on those and being healthy. |

People naturally slow down as they age. Metabolism drops, testosterone levels drop. At 39, you are on the front end of the fun.
Here is some motivation to keep moving. You can eat and lay around and develop all the medical and health problems most everyone else has or you can be one of the smarter ones and remain healthy...... or as healthy as you can be. It's no fun to be sick with a chronic illness and your quality of life will suck. The biggest motivation I can give you is Obamacare..... it's going to SUCK and SUCK big time. No matter what anyone says, the health care is going to be parceled out and fat, out of shape people who develop chronic illnesses ARE NOT going to be treated like they have been in previous years. Unfortunately, I have more than a few friends, all under the age of 50 that are in different stages of cancer, have had strokes, diabetes, high BP, etc. They have all told me that they are getting the run around on treatment and care. A couple of them were told they have less than two years to live ...... the words " QUALITY OF LIFE" get thrown around a lot now....... which is another way of saying they don't want to put the dollars in their care to help them live longer because they won't enjoy the extra time anyway. You can push yourself....(and as you do, it gets way easier) stay in shape and hold of the diseases or you can be at the mercy of a medical system that decides who gets the care and how much. It's like taking care of your own safety and protection by owning firearms...... take your future health in your hands and don't depend on a system that will most likely fail you when you need it most. |

Best reply so far other than the SNL pic lol... Good point. Yeah - going to race my quad this summer again, that keeps me in shape...I actually enjoy the feeling of a beat up body after a race - it makes me feel like I accomplished something... My op must be due to my menstruation LOL. |

You're already on the right track because you see the physical condition you're in and want to make a change. I was in the same boat as you at 39 and I was determined to be in better shape in my 40's, than I was in my 30's. Today I'm 48 and I'm probably in better shape than I was in my 20's and definitely in better shape than most guys around me in their 20's.
The hardest part is getting started. Do that by getting up off the couch and go for a walk at the same time every day. After a couple of weeks, the walks become a habit and your body begins to crave the feeling you get from them. Once you're in the habit, you can expand on the types of workouts you do. Alternate days between your walks and bodyweight type exercise like push ups, squats, pull ups, burpees, etc. Youtube is an excellent resource for info. |
| I am 42 and in the best shape of my life, so its never too late it just takes more dedication especially with the diet. I started a health kick 5 years ago, so its not like i have always been fit. I have maintained 15% body fat after losing 24 lbs five years ago. After losing the fat, i have added 20 lbs of lean muscle. |

Any injuries you had when you were young. WELL come back to haunt you
LOL!!! You guys crack me up.....LOL!!!
