I was just batting this around in my head while laying under my truck in the snow earlier (love winter)

What if guns didn't exist, like just were never invented and we hadn't gotten around to making them them yet.

But we had swords, all kinds of them. Short pocket swords, long and slender long range swords, and heavy as hell swords that would put a hell of a hole in a guy.

Do you think in the same political climate we are that anyone who chose to could walk around with their sword, assuming that most people would only use it for self defense. But of course there would be a percentage of the population that would use the sword they had to be crazy and hurt people for no reason.

Would there be large sword rallies, with an opposing group saying "no swords, its for the children"

Just my brain going of on a tangent while trying not to freeze to death messing with my starter, thought it would make a decent afternoon thread.

Haven't you ever seen Kill Bill. They roam the streets on crotch rockets with sword sheaths built in. I suspect America would be similar. But we are a western culture. Our swords would probably be more of a spork.

Do you think changing the weapon would change the underlying social issues or the response of the government?

The Brits are ever so quaint with their whole "reasonableness" fetish.  Something tells me it's not gonna be long before things become significantly less than reasonable over there.

The steel they used was not good at all.  Hence the reason for folding.  European swords were developed and refined in much more diverse conditions with much better steel.

Katana's are very cool (I have 4 of them and a wazi) but they are not the be all end all.

Yes for dicing up unarmed farmers. But put them up against a drunk Portuguese sailer with a rapier. And the outcome is not as cool.

Agree.   I've been trained in both eastern and western swordsmanship, since very young.   Even an intermediate western swordsmen will kill a kendo master every time.  The Japanese never fought anyone who was any good.  Just amongst themselves.  A man with a rapier will kill a man with a katana in no time.   The western way is just much more efficient.  Not much fun to watch (like the Jap stuff), but it works better.  Too much movie BS in the world of swordsmanship.  The big western two handers weren't swung like a bat either, unless you're taking the head off of a horse, which they will do.  The big two handers are gripped halfway up the blade (not sharp there), and used like a rifle with a bayonet.  Butt strikes, hooking with the guard, all of that.  There are a few 16th century western manuals floating around the web.

Japanese swords are the most pleasing to my eye, but yeah, their steel (tamahaganhe) was made from black iron sand and very poor quality that necessitated the folding to allow somewhat homogeneous properties. Although the folding and the differential tempering along with the blade design & geometry is what makes them so good looking.

What could possibly be done to make a Japanese sword even better? Put it on the end of a long stick.

Well it cost me the price of a cheap M4gery to have Matt Lamey forge it and do the differential temper thing, and I did lug it around in Iraq for a long time using it as a security blankie cause I was otherwise unarmed.  I'd probably let it go for a  Colt or similar AR.    In other words, I don't think it's gonna leave any time soon.

blade vs blade, the folded steel is the strongest. Has any other sword besides a folded steel katana ever cut a bullet in half?

Every time I read about some sword cutting test, they always use the expensive katanas, I haven't seen any evidence otherwise.

Personally I would rather have a 2 handed claymore, but you can't argue with science & physics.
