I just received a bill from my power company for the billing period from December 7 to January 9.

My average bill, even during the hot summer months, has not been more than $194.

I was gone from December 14 to January 13 and set the thermostat to 53 degrees.

The bill I received is for $185 and I used just as much power as last month.

Nothing is broken, only the refrigerator and furnace is on.

I called the power company and the CS woman told me that they don't check the meter all the time and will base the bill upon your average usage. However, the power company doesn't know if they check it either way.

What can I do in this situation? It's not like I can switch power companies.

Most power companies now do not read the meter every month. Usually every two months and base it on average usage. If this is the case, next months bill will reflect the difference.

Also, heating almost always uses more electricity than a/c unless you heat with anything other than electricity.

That's what I was hoping for. Thanks
