Ok so here's the deal. I have a laptop for sale on craigslist. I got a text from a guy wanting me to ship it, and he wants to use paypal.
Is there any way someone can scam you using paypal if I give them my email address that I use for paypal? If so how do I check
them out to make sure they are legit.

Yes, there are ways you can be scammed even using PayPal.

One way, among others, is that the buyer claims it was not as advertised and files a complaint with PayPal and they hold your money or give it back to the buyer.

Do a FTF and cash is king.

I would get their email and send them the invoice that way. I sold a couple things on CL and buyer wanted to use paypal, this is how I did it.

PayPal looks out for the buyer. Never the seller. If the guy gets your laptop and tells PayPal that it doesn't work, PayPal will hit your bank account or credit card for the money and send it back to the buyer. And you'll never get your laptop back.

Tell the buyer it's a face-to-face deal or it's no deal...and cash only.

Don't do it unless you are OK losing that amount of money.  If it's going to pay your rent next month, I'd do a local FTF cash only sale.  If you are willing to roll the dice a little, paypal is acceptable.  If he sends you the payment as a gift on PayPal, you don't pay any fees and he doesn't have a leg to stand on to screw you.  This way, he takes all the risk, not you.

Man I just don't feel comfortable doing a paypal transaction through a craigslist ad. I told the guy I would post the laptop for sale on
ebay, and send him a link to a buy it now auction, and he didn't seem to want to do that. I finally told him that's the only way I would go.

I sold something on Craigslist, and they paid $500 from a stolen PayPal account and Paypal just automatically took the money back after I had sent the item...... Still bitter about it....I tried to fight it but PayPal just blew me off nothing they could do but this was 3 years ago so....don't send the laptop for a week or something make sure the funds are legit somehow....

Craigslist people should be in your local area that's what it's intended for is my take on it...

Good instincts.

If you're selling a laptop, look at some of the websites that are technical (techpowerup.com for one...).

If he didn't want to go through ebay, good chance he was a scammer...

Face to face.  I agree with the group.  As a seller, Paypal has always seemed to eff me when they can.
