I always respond: "If you really want to get technical / snarky about it: Guns are simply designed to propel projectiles made of metal towards a target of the user's choosing." This is usually my response. Guns were made to harm whatever they are shot at. Be it an animal, bad guy, good guy or piece of paper. |

That is indeed snarky and unproductive. Eh, I said the propel projectile thing. Then went on to say that knives slice up what the user wants sliced, clubs bash what the user wants bashed. |

That is indeed snarky and unproductive. I beg to differ about unproductive. It has been largely successful at shutting down wild and baseless claims about which guns are "okay" and which are evil assault weapons, designed specifically to kill. Liberal snark needs to be countered with Conservative snark-its the only language they understand. |

Don't beat around the bush. Guns protect people. Focus on that point and you force them to either try to disprove it, or to argue that protecting people isn't important. But in order to protect, they must been bullet spitting 6000 round/second killing machines! |

I'll be honest, I'm not sure you guys have even graduated high school.
I'm on your side and even I don't buy the arguments you're making. It's as if you're just trying to high five each other without influencing ANYBODY who doesn't already agree with you. Tell you what, OP, friend me and point me at the discussion you're having with that person. Let me take over and let's see how it goes. Call it the Facebook Challenge. |

The fact that they stop talking to you doesn't mean that you argued well. Who said anything about making them stop talking to me? Does assuming you know how interactions go when you are not actually involved in them help you argue well? It shuts down the baseless claims that guns are only "made to kill", and brings the conversation to a more productive place. It makes them see the gun as a tool with uses other than killing-in any form. |

I'm not even sure YOU understand why guns are important. |

Please-pray tell how your excellent argument technique, and method of dealing with people (as evidenced in this thread) has helped to bring anyone to our cause? |

Please-pray tell how your excellent argument technique, and method of dealing with people (as evidenced in this thread) has helped to bring anyone to our cause? It's not like I already offered to do so with one of your liberal friends or anything. Oh wait, I did. |

It's not like I already offered to do so with one of your liberal friends or anything. Oh wait, I did. First off, you offered to friend the OP on facebook, not me. (although I never mind friending arfcommers on FB). Secondly, I do not have problems handling my own arguments just fine, (although I am open to other methods). Third-my admittedly snarky response-which really has been pretty effective is really used to cut through their snark and emotional reaction a bit. Afterwards we can drive the discussion to a more productive place. (I like to steer it towards self defense an protection as well, first at home, then towards other ends, if it is appropriate at that time). I am certainly not advocating it as the be-all end-all argument. |
