...what do you think would happen if we stopped all foreign aid and required all merchandise sold here to be made here?

Walmart implosion resulting in Max Max apocalyptic scenario.

We would be entirely fucked.

We would either not be able to manufacture fairly basic stuff because nobody is willing to work in a plant for $8 an hour, or the basic stuff we take four granted would become too expensive to buy, either way we do without an awful lot of stuff.

The former - great

The latter - protectionism bullshit.

What would happen ? Well, to start, who would buy our stuff? We still sell a lot (planes, defense, heavy equipment). Second, the threat / use of foreign made goods is a pressure on domestic makers to keep prices low and quality high. Look at the autos made in the 70's when this was the de facto situation - SHIT quality and high prices. The list can go on and on as to the ramifications of such an idea. In short - our country would suffer.

I think we need to cut off all financial aid to other countries until we get our debt problem solved.

I don't mind cutting off foreign aid to some countries that hate us.  But as far as cutting ourselves off from the world economic market: the rest of the world would flourish and we would collapse.
