Power steering went out on my DD yesterday on the way to work. Looks like a line leak and not the pump (hopefully...still not sure) and my furnace died tonight and it is 25F outside. Looks like an inducer motor problem but again, not positive yet. Gonna be a busy weekend :( But there IS a silver lining. A very good friend of mine is a mechanic on the side and has a great shop with a lift and also just happens to be a foreman for a large HVAC company in town as his main job. I've always told him that he should be on Discovery channel because he can fix or fabricate anything and could make Jesse James look bad. Anyway, he's going to help me with both problems tomorrow. It is good to have friends! And yes he'll be compensated very much appropriately. |

Quoted: remember to have all your faucets set to drip, so you don't get any frozen pipes, if you can't keep your house heated Very good point. I've been running my gas fired fireplace all evening and it seems to be keeping the upstairs 2 floors at between 55-60F (which is impressing me) and the basement is staying stable at a little above that. That is where much of the plumbing is, plus it is supposed to get above freezing for the next several days (though not by a lot). I think we should be ok, but your tip is exactly what is what I would have been doing if it was any worse than this. |

Well my friend showed up first thing this morning with a mutual buddy that just wanted to get out of the house and go do something and so we (me and gf) fired them up with some fresh roasted/ground/brewed coffee and went to work on the furnace. Turned out my diagnosis last night was correct (inducer motor) but I had no idea how to find one fast. There was also another problem that the mutual buddy found and that was the main switch itself. $2 part, but it was wonky. My buddy called a couple of his co-workers and they steered us to a local wholesaler that carries parts for my particular (Armstrong) furnace. My buddy called them up and they said they had the part but were closing in an hour. He told them to put it on his employer's account and we ran down there and got it and it was indeed the motor we needed. Got it for half retail $177...stopped at Sears on the way home for the switch then swapped out the motor and switch and BOOM, furnace fired right up. GF was jumping around in glee! Furnace running like a champ. My buddy said I gotta go and get to work on your 4Runner at the shop, plus I have a couple of oil changes to do too. He wouldn't except any money (for the furnace) but I asked him can I at least buy you guys a case of beer? He said hell yeah bring it on over. So I get the beer and head over to his place and my buddies have the 4Runner up on the rack and they said come come here and check this out. Joe (the fabricator and shop owner) said the problem was in a part that would be certainly an OEM Toyota part and possibly hard to find (it is a 96). He said but I made one and want to know if you are ok with that? I looked at it and thought are you kidding me? That thing was at least twice as good as the original. AToyota pencil pusher accountant would have said it was overkill. Hell yes I was ok with that. And it works like a charm. Both of my problems were solved by 3PM. So he finished that and brought the next customer car in (his wife's) for an oil change and another buddy showed up just to chit chat and we all then started to lay into that beer. Not too much but just enough to have a great day and great conversations. I put a wifi in his shop a while back that is hacked to pull his internet from his house wirelessly and it works great. It is my skill that I can contribute to him, but he in turn has skills that I don't have and that was the point of this thread. Cherish those friends that help you, and help them in return! Damn, today was a great day! |
