My computer has been running a little slowly lately. I have Windows defrag my hard drive every night. However the Windows defrag program shows that my System is 15% fragmented and the defrag will not defrag it. I'm using Windows 7.

Any ideas?

I'd run a malwarebytes scan.

Download the free one and make sure it updates.

Most likely those are system files and as such can't be moved as they are either in use and/or locked.

run chkdsk /f
don't defrag everynight, no reason to.

This is what I was going to post -  a  slow sytem isn't necessarily due to disk fragmentation.  Use the Task Manager to analyze what's going on.

Just analyzed mine on a fresh ( 2 week old ) rebuild -  9%. Nothing to be alarmed about. You don;t need to defrag every night. Mine's scheduled for 2am on Wednesdays.

Is there anything using an inordinate amount of CPU cycles, memory, page faults, etc in your task/resource manager?  Is everything slow, or only certain applications?

Very slow, I sometimes just watch the little wheel spin.

Reload windows is what I would do next if it was my computer.

Run MSCONFIG and see how much crap you have selected under the STARTUP tab.

Get a Mac, they don't get fragmented.

How much free space is on the drive?

Try freeing up space until you have about 200 gigs free.

Then, find and follow the procedure to remove your swap file (temporarily).

Defrag and run checkdisk. Also, let your SMART drive functions work, which requires the drive be spun down and OFF and the computer unplugged once in a while.  While you are rebooting for all this, let the computer sit unplugged for a minute or two.  That might let the drive recover from some lost sectors. (But, if that fixes it, start planning on replacing the drive.)

Then add your swap file back, and maintain a decent buffer of free space on the drive.

Consider getting a second drive for storage of movies, music, photos, etc.  Anybody using a TB of space is got that stuff using it.  Nobody has 600 gb of personal MS Word documents about finances.

LOL tell that to my macbookpro

Any mechincal drive computer will slow down with use over time.

A reload of the OS usually makes it snappy again.

Mechanical drives suck and macs are not magically exempt from that fact.

Agree with this man ^

I'm big into computers myself and I have to say that Windows 7 sucks.. (I'm going to take flak for this)

If you want a reliable system that was used on servers for years, Try Windows XP Professional X64.
It's based on Server 2003, A super fast system that is made for databases.

Windows 7 and 8 are slow because of all the gadgetry and things that run behind the background.
The Aero Theme also contributes too!

Don't believe me? turn your windows aero off and run it on classic theme.
You'll see speed boosts right away usually.

Server 2003 was my fav server OS from MS.

XP 64bit was one of the worst desktop OS's ever made, mainly due to vendor support of hardware/software.

Win7 is a great OS and flies on a system with todays hardware.
Win8 is even faster then Win7 with the same hardware, I personally love Win8.

Aero takes hardly any processing power to run on todays hardware.

My i7 3770K overclocked to 4.5ghz laughs at pretty much everything I throw at it.

Or a bad sector on the drive that can not processed.

if you only have 15% fragmented, then further defragmentation isnt necessary

boot to safe mode, go to control panel and uninstall as many unnecessary programs as possible.  do a disk cleanup (select all options here, except for compress)

sould be G2G then.  works for my and my familys problems 95% of the time

if this doesnt work, then uninstall ALL PROGRAMS YOU POSSIBLY CAN, then redownload and reinstall.  if that doesnt work, blow it away and reinstall Windows

DO NOT DEFRAGMENT YOUR HARDDRIVE EVERY NIGHT

you are putting uncessesarry wear and tear on your harddrive... if you are running windows 7 it automatically defrags.

look at clearing temp files with cleanmgr and ccleaner.  possibly a ram upgrade

Downloaded that one. It stated that it would take a whole day to do a complete defrag. So I ran their quick defrag program. it made NO difference.

I think that I'll just lve with it until the time come's that I'll have to do a complete recovery.

Thank's for all of the suggestions from everyone.
