I once met a lobbyest who was helping eradicate the scourge of cigarettes from New York, and my employers facilities.
Here is how this goes down......

Eliminate all positive media on cigarettes.
Begin making it more inconvienent to smoke.
Apply unflattering images, messages and media to smoking
Increase tax to reduce consumption.  Ban the easiest targets (flavored).
Legally harass manufacturers and sellers to make it increasingly difficult and not worth the risks.
Once enough people give it up, banning will be easier with few objections (if it is even needed).

This is going to be a long term process due to their inability to outright ban firearms.
Gun owners will be made to look like fools or crazy folk
Shooting sports will be restricted (probably closing ranges due to zoning issues and new laws against shooting on ones own property)
Tax ammo, raise the price exponentially anyway possible.
All sorts of new security and records needed for firearm sales.  This cost is coveredby the gunshop.
Media focus and blame on the manufacturer paired with more and more govt compliance requirements.
