I want to buy my son a remote control car.  Electric powered with radio.  Is there anything decent for under $100?

Yes, but they will have to be used, and you will have to find a "good deal". Not sure how into RC's you are, or how much you know, but I love RC's and have  4 & 8 year old boys. In your price range, you will more than likely have to go smaller scale. 1/8 & 1/10 scale is the most popular (and fun IMO), but also the highest priced. You can go 1/24 and get some pretty quality vehicles, but they're small. If you want durability and ease of parts to find, stay with Traxxas, Hpi, & Losi.

If he's a beginner, a brushed motor/esc combo will be fine (can still hit 35+ mph usually). If you hear/read "Brushless", the price goes way up (but they are better and usually a ton faster- we're talking 60 to 90 mph!)). For a beginner, also ignore Lipo batteries (this is what gets you to insane speeds when combined with a brushless set-up). Again a lot faster, but much more expensive, and require more thought.

My suggestion is to hit up Craigslists/Ebay, and look for one "Ready to Run or RTR", with at least one good battery, and a charger. RC's can be become very expensive, very quick.

I just managed to find a very nice HPI electric Firestorm on the local CL, complete & RTR, for $100 a few weeks ago. It will my 8 year olds first hobby grade RC. It should last him for years.

Hope this helps, if not, drop me a pm.

ETA: A quality, standard size electric RC, new, will range from $200- on up.

Look for a Traxxas 2WD Slash on CL.

It may be a little more than 100.00, but they are almost indestructable.

You can replace the brushed motors for next to nothing.
Tons of aftermarket and stock parts out there.
