for an 11-year-old boy. Where can I get one at a good price? I'd like to get 3-4 cars, locomotive, tracks and switches. Gonna be a Christmas gift.

Model trains are just as bad as BRD and can be as expensive...
Go with EZ rail track, you can find starter sets on Amazon. I currently have a few HO, N and Z scale sets. None are DCC. ETA: Bachmann is a decent brand, the starter sets won't have switches, you may need to get an additional expansion set for that. ByteTheBullet (-: |

Bachmann is great low cost stuff, if you want something to start and will last a lifetime, look into a LGB starter set, usually around $300 all comes down to size and budget... This. LGB is great, doesn't require a kid with hands like a surgeon to get back on the track, and can be detailed as hell, if he wants to learn. THEN, once he has some skills at model work, get him into O or HO, depending how good his eyesight is. You can fit a Z scale layout into a briefcase...

Go to their website, snag the 40% off any one item coupon... Buy train set when not on sale. They're on sale this week 25% off, so next week probably not on sale. |

I'll give some different advice.
Skip the sets and go to a hobbystore and pick up the pieces. You'll get better quality. Athearn makes excellent locomotives and rolling stock. If your boy is a model builder he will enjoy assembling the rolling stock (box cars, etc) Very simple assembly, no gluing, just a couple of screws. And they will be a LOT more realistic looking with all kinds of choices of inventory. Sometimes (usually) the sets will come with a pretty poor performer and sometimes poor engines. (Although Bachmann isn't too bad) At any rate, sometimes the quality is so poor the kid gets turned off of the hobby. Athearn and Walthers usually have any style of diesel locomotive in any roadname you want. Sometimes it's cool to have what's outside on your layout. Steam locomotives tend to be more expensive because they have more moving parts. Go this route and if he decides this is his hobby, he'll have some inventory and won't have to start from scratch all over again. Model Railroader magazine is your friend. |
