So NPR (yes, the commie bastards) just reported today that the LNG tanker Ob River just completed the first winter time crossing of the Arctic Ocean.  It sailed from Norway and above Russia all the way to Japan.  The route saved 20 days sailing and about $1 million in fuel.  Not only that, they didn't have to diddle around in the Suez canal.

Non NPR (Commie Bastard) link to story

Just imagine it.  The roof of the world is warm enough that a big boat filled with lots of really touchy gas could poke its way through the ice in winter.  Another few years and we may have even less of that pesky ice to get in the way of commerce.

Before you bash me for a tree hugging, bunny loving, water head of an eco-nut, consider this.

We, meaning all us petro burning folks in the good parts of the world should be taking full credit for this.

If we insist that climate change is purely natural and humans haven't contributed, we give up any claim we might have on folks traveling the northern sea.

I think that it's like we all chipped in and helped to build an express way.  We should charge a toll and be compensated for our efforts.

If ice melting in the North Pole proves that GW is real, then why isn't ice melting in the South Pole?

good question.  short answer is based on land mass distribution among the hemispheres.  on current theory (that is pretty well established) the ocean is a giant carbon sink.  in the northern hemisphere, you have most of the GHG emission, while most of the ocean is in the southern hemisphere.  the second factor is that it is more than just emissions--we don't really change the ocean's ability to sequester carbon, but land use/land cover change is very easy.  again, this takes place in the northern hemisphere far more than in the south.  so the current theory predicts significantly rising temperatures north of 66N, with moderate increases south of 66S.

the near-surface air temp record seems to be showing this, but one of the very valid critiques of GW is that temperature databases are suspicious.  temperature trends are easy to cross-reference against things like earlier greening in the spring along with glacier shortening, but again, that's far easier to accomplish in the northern hemisphere where there is more land surface.  such data is spottier down south.

i'm not telling you how things are--you have to make up your own mind there.  but it's important to understand the arguments that the other side is making before judging them.

Two bad things about ice melting:

1) Ice is a good reflector of heat. Less ice means more heat
