This may be a dumb question but what did they do in 64 that makes the pre 64 so wanted?

The cheapened product lost some cache... Perception is everything! Consider that the Remington 700 isn't controlled feed and has a good rep, but it was 'horrific' when the M70 lost it. The bottom line is that they re-designed on the cheap. This quite possibly was a good move at the time, otherwise the M70 could have gone extinct. The Model 12 was doomed by cheaper competition. |

Yep, the change from model 12 to 1200 was much bigger and to a junkier gun. |
