This may be a dumb question but what did they do in 64 that makes the pre 64 so wanted?

Bean counters decided that production cost was more important than production quality, not just on the model 70 either

Pre-64's used the controlled feed system, similar to a 98 Mauser.  Post 64 they went with a system similar to the  Remington 700.  Cheaper to manufacture.  Both were made in the US.

The purists are still mad about it.

I've owned a pre64, post 64, post 64 CRF (classic) and a new FN.

FN gun is best.

The cheapened product lost some cache...  Perception is everything!  Consider that the Remington 700 isn't controlled feed and has a good rep, but it was 'horrific' when the M70 lost it.

The bottom line is that they re-designed on the cheap.  This quite possibly was a good move at the time, otherwise the M70 could have gone extinct.  The Model 12 was doomed by cheaper competition.

I'm a Remington fan, but those new FN guns seem pretty damn nice. May need to look into them soon.

I just bought a M70 last year. They're back to control feed.

Yep, the change from model 12 to 1200 was much bigger and to a junkier gun.

compare:
1953 Model 70 Featherweight .308

1949 270WCF & 1937 30 Gov't-06 Standard Model's

vs
1964

pretty much the changes were: controlled round feed to push feed, hand cut/ machine cut checkering to impressed checkering, wood finishing, sights

no Model 70 has EVER been made in Japan, you have Winchester confused with Weatherby.

or Browning.

In all fairness, I'd rate Miroku over most Hartford, CT-built stuff from the last 40 years.

Prior to 1964 they were hand fitted (gunsmithed....think custom gun) pieces of art.

After  .....Junk.
