I was surfin' the net with you'se guys las' nite at the homestead, when....
FLASH - BOOM!!!!!!!!! A lightning strike hit NEAR (I beleive) like REALLY NEAR the house. After picking myself up off the floor, and changing my undies, I Unplugged the computer and headed in the living room, to check the Stereo equipment. Computer OK, surround sound receiver, CD player, big screen, all OK. Satellite receiver NOT at all OK. The TV had been off, but when I went to check the TV, there was a low, faint glow of the "On" indicator light (not as bright as when it was actually on) I could smell that distinctive smell of fried electrical parts. So I unplugged it, and plugged it back in. A high pitched whine / whimper, but nothing else from the satellite receiver. It would NOT power up at all. Th CRAP of it all is I just, like 2 weeks ago, got the satellite and receivers (replacing Dish network) So, I'm off to Circuit City today to get 'em replaced. Sorry for the long story, but I wanted y'all to feel sorry for me. Maybe I came to the wrong place. [:D] [BD] |

That wasn't a lightning strike. That was the Israelis using an EMP weapon on your house. The technology isn't that powerful yet, so it only got only piece of equipment.

Ya know.. a buddy of mine has a severe prob with lightning killing his appliances.
The good thing is, give DTV/Dave a call; and 9/10 of the time they will replace it for you with just shipping costs on your end. Be sure to pull your card though... BTW, if they reject you for some very odd reason; I'll buy your card for 50$. no shit! |

Hey, wrap that card in tissue paper or something [:D] If it's an "H" I'll give ya $100
Really! I'll get it and wipe it. Selling the card is not illegal. Check E-bay and you will see I'm trying to rip you off! [:P] H -card = generic face = $$$$$$ HU-card= Football player on face = $$$$/$ P*-card = $$ BTW, If you get a new one, it'll be a P card. EDIT: Just want to say, it is illegal to get all DTV channels (including all locals), by hacking the datafeed off the satellite; without the written consent of DTV and necessary subsidiaries. Edit for me: If it comes through my backyard... you can't patent air. Edit once more for those of you in the know... H* cards are extincting now. Fully dead around (late) '03. FYI ----- Get your P cards quickly. |

That was DirecTV's version of a no-knock warrant. They were looking for hacked Test-cards and apparently got the wrong house... Didn't they?

[Deja Vu]
Lightning strike, huh! [/Deja vu] My mom had a Macintosh SE wiped out like that once, unfortunately I was using it at the time at her place. I kept telling her to get and replace her surge protection devices every 6month to a year..... Well, she learned that day ($800 and an analog board & HD later). |

Sounds like a plot to knock out your communications with the outside world.
[frag] Make of list of the people and organizations you have pissed off or offended in the last year and start with those. You better use the computer or a new note pad to make the list or you could run out of space. [;D] |

It is a little late but...., there is always current going out to the dish, even when the receiver is turned off. Best thing during a storm is to unplug the thing. I have to unplug it when I disconnect the dish. I live in an rv and set up/take down often. When the signal strength meter is in the circuit it whistles even if the receiver is turned off. It does not when it is unplugged. Good Luck on your new one. John

"got blowed up?" You really do sound like you're from around here.
Sorry for the long story, but I wanted y'all to feel sorry for me. View Quote No sympathy here [:)]. I don't even have a working TV. Also, I ripped my big toenail two weeks ago, so I'm still hurting. Did you pay the extra $30 for the 'insurance'? I never do, but sometomes I regret it!

I went to Circuit City and the replaced the receivers as they were still under warranty. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the dish didn't get fried too. (I'm not usually that lucky) I can still opt in for the insurance. $6 / mo. I dunno...... |

"got blowed up" LOL! Anybody remember that video of them good ol' boys doing a pyrotechnic number on a junk car?...
"That blowed up REAL good!" hahaha [BD] Coincidentally, my better half informed me yesterday that we are getting Direct TV when she gets back home. She just saw it on vacation at her Dad's house and now she's sold on it. Who am I to argue with that? [:D] We don't get lighting here in Southern California. Heck, we don't even get rain. Y'all may hate us but at least god loves us. [^] Wait a sec... I feel a tremor. [shock] |

[shock] View Quote LOL...well, all I can say is that when SoCal is NOT shaking, it is either rioting, mudsliding, or burning. I got to experience ALL of it in the three years I was there: South Central riots in 1993, the Northridge Earthquake in 1994, San Gabriel foothills fires in 1994?, and terrible mudslides somewhere in there. After 3 years there, I moved back to Texas ASAP! GOD BLESS TEXAS! |

If you have an RCA or clone (mine is a memorex) You can get a new dual lnb at radio shack that will work (I am using one now, my old one died after 5 years in the weather of a cracked cover that let in the rain.) for about 50 bucks. I am sure they are cheaper elsewhere |

[:D] [BD] View Quote BAH quit your whining. ive had worse. try a lightning bolt to a tree 10 feet from my house. $6000-$7000 electronics fried. both TVs dead, 52" and 32". stereo equip fried, cordless phones fried. some computer equip fried. dish net gear fried. i was in the pool table room near where it hit. *gizmo imitation : bright light bright light!* the bolt spiked in throught the dish on the roof (it was warped when we looked at it) also it came in via the power meter imagine, meter was 12 feet away. btw changing wasnt a good idea with the merger in the works. you will have dishnet gear again. |

Went to Circuit City and they repleced BOTH receivers, as thye were still under warranty. Came home plugged them in, and I'm back in business. No harm, no foul. (Had to call DTV to get the new cards / equip activated) Nova5 - Your story does indeed top mine. Hope insurance set you right. |

You want to know what is really freaky about this thread?
When I opened it up, a pop up ad for "Direct TV" came up shortly after. Sob story? Or........ an info-mercial? |
