[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Naming Computers (Page 1 of 2)
Posted: 11/28/2012 10:39:20 PM EDT
As I said in another post, I picked up another computer, CHEAP, to use as a controller to transfer music on LP's to hard drives (by the by, I also have a lot of reel to reel tapes; is there an adapter or something to run from an Akai , ie THIS:
to feed into a lap top and then a HD?) So, anyhow, by practice, I name my computers. There's been Lyta and Willow
and Purdey
and Caitlin.
The main computer is Romana But this "new" one, that I am using for music processing, I think I shall call it........................................................

Last job I had I had a server room full of cartoon characters. They let me name them, so one set of systems was based on Warner brothers characters (roadrunner, porky, elmer etc) and the other set on Disney (Donald, Daisy, Pluto, Minnie, Mickey, etc).
The two tape jukeboxes were Tweetie and Sylvester LOL. |

We just gave them whatever we came up with at the time.. I named an Enterprise 4500 "Franklin" after the Peanuts character Ahhh, Franklin! I remember him well...........................in the beginning, they made him the first owner of Snoopy! _______________________________________________________________________________ ("Yes, Sir! Good Ole Charlie Brown!.....................How I hate him!"--Franklin, (w,stte), "Peanuts") |

I started out naming devices with names of the four horseman. But those ran out pretty quick, as you can imagine. From there I switched to Bosses from the Metal Gear Series. The iPad I'm currently posting from is The Fury. Funny, I have a buddy who has his named after the Patriots, JD, GW, etc. His WiFi is La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo. |

In the beginning they were named for the owners at home but now that there are more computers than home occupants, I wanted to come up with a way to name them as well so I came up with aircraft carriers. My main computer is the Enterprise. That reminds me when I was naming war ships, cargo ships, mining platforms, and farming platforms in the game "Overlord". War ships were named for women warriors: Xena Ivanova Joan D'Arc Dynagirl Cargo ships were named for musicians: Nicks Heart Benatar Manchester Mining platforms for "North Sea oil rigs": Jennifer Ester Iolair Farming platforms........women's names starting with "B", the first one being Brenda (of 90210)....because she was seen as very fertile I think that's about it......oh, wait, the planets! Starlets of the 80's and before: Aja, Tori, Stacey, Traci, Christi, Andrea,.......................... _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ("Mae West, cut your engines, we're coming aboard!"--Colombian Coast Guard, (w,stte), "Green Ice") |

I did a service call in a place that had two DEC VAX computers. The secretaries named them, but now many years later I can only remember the name "Chewey". In Texas, you could tell which universities had DEC mainframes because of the sequence seen in names. Ie, TAMU: Thor, Freya.........(we estimated that Wilbur was a DEC 10) North Texas University: George, Judy, Elroy SWT: Tegan, Nyssa, Leela, Peri ______________________________________________________________________________________ ("What's in a name?"--Melkur, (w,stte), Dr. Who, "The Keeper of Traken") |

If youre really asking, you should adopt a proper naming scheme based on semantics not randomly selected pop trivia.
Such as location-purpose. Then anyone can figure out names of computers WITHOUT you having to tell them. And when working in a multiple person environment, that goes two ways as youll know what someone else did without asking them. If you name all of your servers based off your favorite actresses to masturbate to, how am i supposed to know who number 11 was? On the reel, just use a stero 1/8 to rca adapter from radio shack. Your sound card can do line in or mic in. Just make sure its set to line in. |
|
At my last job we used to name our servers after ships. Which was cool. We set up a new network and I named the servers on it after WWII fighters. One firewall was named Wobblin Gobblin...
As for your reel to reel, is there an analog output that you can feed into an amplifier and then feed it out into an audio in jack or mic jack or something? |

As far as the Akai, that is one approach......not quite sure on what quality might be lost, though. Still experimenting with the music lap top, Gabrielle. Got it to record mp3 tonight from an LP......but it's not playing it for me, yet, off the recording. _______________________________________________________________________ ("Our star charts refer to this world as D11-K69."--Morvellian Commander Sharrel "Well, that's not particularly helpful to me. So what sort of music do you listen to, what are you transferring?
I know you catalog stuff , well I think I know you do, seems like you mentioned that you do, at least with movies. I had literally hundreds of tapes that were lost to a leaking roof a few years ago, many from the early and mid 80s, and many that were sort of low production, rare, or imported that I ordered from a local record store. I'm sort of a connoisseur, or maybe more appropriately a collector of eclectic music, new acts, and early versions of bands, or bands that members of famous bands or musicians were with in their early and unknown years. Most are no longer available anywhere, and even where those acts have become famous, and their music is available , some of the tracks on the early albums are not. As far as the computers though, I never name mine. Well, I did name one HAL. Not really creative, but just something quick. |

This is the album. My parents were heavy into latin music though by the time I came around, it has shifted much to Mexicali Jazz, Sergio Mendes, and the like. As it is, the record is in near mint condition.......and there are tons of them. As far as how much they will be worth to me? Xavier's music doesn't sound like it is really my gig, from the few seconds I've heard of it. Other music, though, MIGHT have some dancing potential.....in an amateur way. There are always, further, my own records from the 70's-90's time period; Brannigan, Heart, Benatar, soundtracks, and the like. IDEALLY, I would like it all on digital where I can access it easily.......but the tapes and the vinyl will still be in storage somewhere. That, of course, is still QUITE a way off....................if ever. _________________________________________________________________________________ (Peri is locked in a bomb shelter on a distant asteroid. I never did get much of it done though. I have a some vinyl, but not much, a lot of it's my mom's. Speaking of Latin stuff, there are a couple of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass albums in there somewhere. Funny thing about that though, is He was Jewish and his parents were Ukranian and Romanian. None of the band was Latin either. Speaking of Sergio Mendes, Alpert married Sergio's singer Lani Hall, and they all three recorded a song together, Dreamers in 2009 , with her on lead vocals, and Alpert on trumpet. Alpert is the A of A&M records, and Sergio Mendes and his group Brasil 66' signed on to A&M with Lani as the lead singer in 1966. Small world, and though I knew a few things about them, I just read a few articles and wiki for a lot of that. |

Sigh. I was about to suggest "Garibaldi" as he was the guy everyone went to for info on B5... ...The problem is, he was also a huge Looney Tunes fan, and you might take that the wrong way. ![]() Well, sometimes, it's just decided by what pictures are available. Ie, "Caitlin", was a 286 and a black and white picture was better for the system. "Willow" was going to be my library machine while "Purdey", a spy, was going to be my Internet machine. "Lyta" got the job for the one heck of a picture. _________________________________________________________ ("Captain..............they're PI**ED!"--Lyta, (w,stte), "Babylon 5") |
Ahh...I tend to name things after a particular "thing". I.e. all machines in one domain will be named after synonyms of being lost/mislaid...another set named after planets. At home though I'm not that inventive...the mythtv machine gets named "mythtv", the home pc gets named "home", so on, so forth

My machine has my name, my wife's has her name, one is called Living Room etc... Our pets are also named less than creatively, we have cat named Lumpkin, we found him on the side of Lumpkin Rd, the dog is named Bandit, he has black markings on his face like a robbers mask in an old movie. When I was a kid we had a cat named Kitty and a dog named Brown Dog. Don't worry though, we did put a lot of thought into naming the kids, although Uno, Zwei and Trey were considered briefly. |

our servers are named after greek gods , with exchange being medusa... We did that for a while...the problem was they caught on to how we were naming things. We were building a new datacenter for a new exchange out in the far East...one that none of us figured would last for very long before it went up in flames, heads rolled, and we pulled everything out. We named the database server "Icarus". Yep...couple years later, it flamed out, we packed it all up, and took our ball home
We're no longer allowed to name things after cataclysmic events, either.. |

Your Akai R2R deck has line level out through RCA connectors, right? If you're really concerned about sound quality then you should get an external USB DAC. If not, get a twin RCA to 3.5" stereo patch cable and connect it to the line in on your laptop. |

yeah, back in my Network admin days I had a room full of servers as well. I named them ASR1, ASR2, ASR3, etc. Also got crazy with some of the others and named them TTS1, TTS2, TTS3, SQL1, SQL2, and for a whole lotta fun I had one named "NON PRODUCTION TEST SERVER".
We were pretty crazy back in those days though. |

frequently used machines should have short names which are composed of keyboard characters alternating between your left and right hands. this makes them fast and easy to type. the worst names are long and depend entirely on one hand (set of fingers) against the keyboard. qwerty is bad. all left hand. mandy is good. both hands equally. ar-jedi |

Once you get to a certain point, you really need to adopt a naming convention. At work we use
For instance P3PLSMTP01-01 First two = site code P3, (which Data center it is in) Next one= Environment P=prod T=test S=staging etc Next = OS L=linux w=winderz Last part, Server purpose with a number designator |

Playboy, Hustler, Penthouse, etc.
