I am upgrading my winter clothes and for the first time have put some thought into layering.. For simplicity I am looking at it as base/wicking layer then insulation layer and then outer shell.
I think i may be OVER layering at times because i get sweaty then cold OR I am just using the wrong layers/material types. My biggest cold times are hunting - get out of the truck, walk up to 1/2 miles then get in a tree stand - so I do get sweaty but then im sitting still for a while What i have to work with right now is (and im open to buy what I need) Base/Wicking - a) Minus-33 merino wool bottoms b) 100% polyester running tights/pants (these arent specifically wicking though) c) several wicking type long sleeve tops Insulation - a) Rocky thermal underwear top/bottom (100% polyester, medium weight - what walmart sells - OR is this a base layer?), b) Under Armour cold gear Hoodie Shell - soft shell jacket and carhartt duck material pants I am getting the minus 33 bottoms and UA hoodie for christmas. For cool weather i would use either the soft shell OR the hoodie as a outer shell My questions are: 1) Would you ever need to add a layer UNDER the merino wool bottoms? 2) What sort of insulation layer would you put OVER the merino wool bottoms, and when? 3) What combo should i put under the UA hoodie? wicking shirts / rocky top thermals / hoodie-softshell or do i need to get something different?? 4) Although the running pants and/or the rocky thermals are 100% polyester, are they really a wicking layer if they dont specifically say wicking? 5) In cool weather, could you skip the insulation layer and just use the base/wicking layer under the shells? thanks for educating me Brian |
