| Thinking about getting one this year.what brand is a good one? Probably be making around one to one and a half pound loaves. |

I thought about getting one too but then I tried a no-knead recipe.
No-Knead NYT Recipe I baked some yesterday, and set up another batch last night for dinner tonight. It's really easy, so I decided to hold off on the machine and bought a cast iron Dutch oven to bake in instead...you know, more of a multitasker. Everyone I know that has a bread maker all said the same thing, they used it at first and then just sort of stopped. Guess I'm not helping too much, but just in case you've never heard of the no knead is all. |

We have one. We have trouble getting it to make light fluffy bread from scratch. They're good, just...really dense. We tried some fast rise yeast, but it didn't seem to change anything. Although, wife says the reciepe was light on sugar, so maybe the yeast didn't react as much as it should.
(She makes awesome bread from scratch. The Machine was a gift, so she's trying to get it to work out...) |
| I got one as a gift and liked it, but shortly after getting it I threw out the heel of a loaf which happened to have the bread maker's paddle stuck in the bottom of it, which I did not notice. For some reason I never remember to find a replacement and on the shelf in my basement it sits. |

I picked up an Oster brand bread machine last year that was on clearance at Kmart if I remember correctly. So far I have made 25 loaves of bread, with all but two loaves turning out great. The two that did not work out were still good to eat, but, it was my fault they were not quite right because of my mistake concerning measuring ingredients. I have made bread from box and from scratch and had no issues. I think making the bread by hand is the way to go ultimately, but, for convenience, speed, and if you order the boxed bread mixes in bulk from Amazon, the price is not too bad and makes having a machine worth it. At least to me.
You can make Jelly and other goodies with a bread machine too, and I know some people who like to make bread by hand but they will use the machine to mix or do some of the process, with the bread being removed and formed and then finished in the oven. Best of both worlds. Now where did I hide my Sourdough Starter............. |
| i have one but havent used it in a while. the first time i used it the top 3/4 of the bread was great, the bottom 1/4, not so much. the "mixer" didnt mix all the ingredients together and there was dry mix in the bottom on one corner. i fixed that on the next go by just giving it a quick mix by hand. after figuring that out it has worked great ever since. its nice to just set and forget and have a nice loaf of home made bread with very little work. |
