I'm debating about buying my first gun safe this Black Friday.  It seems I could get a 14 gun Stack on for $279 or a 24 Gun Field and Stream (Stack On) for $399.  Any suggestions comments?

Always get a bigger one than you think you will need.

Stack-On does NOT make gun safes.
Get a real safe... if you can.

Save up for a better one. Check out the Safes and Security forum under Armory. Look for something with a 10 Gauge body, minimum.

I will continue to disagree...  instead look at standard sizes so you can later buy a second and mount it to the floor next to the first one you buy!  Bolt both safes to the floor, wall behind them, and to each other.  Criminals then need to decide which safe they are going to try to break into as opposed to one larger target.

Now, the safes you list are really not much of a safe.  Consider these more of a steel locker then safe!  Look for a used safe on craigslist or paper and you can sometimes find a real safe for about 30% retail.  My Ft Knox safe is a 1200# monster and I paid $300 for it.  I hate to think what it would cost new but lets guess to $1500 - $2000.  One of my best grabs off craigslist and YEA I did get the combo

Where's the fun in that?

I have a Cannon myself. I was mainly commenting on the size.
After reading your first line I think you just cost me money. Thanks

stack on makes some safes that aren't cabinets. i picked up a 8 gun safe for 250 on a fathers day sale. It may not be the thickest out there but it's better than nothing and definitely more secure than a cabinet with a simple key lock.

I'll end up with a bigger nicer one some day. but it fit the bill for now and didn't break the bank.

Don't get one with an electronic lock.  Too many electronic/battery related problems.

Try Craigslist for a used one.  Especially if you have cash and a truck.

You'll realistically be able to fit 6 or 7 guns in the 14 gun and 10 -12 guns in the 24-gun.  Especially if they're ARs and/or scoped guns –– they take more space.

That 24-gun for $400 doesn't sound bad.  I think it's got some fire protection in it too.  Make sure to bolt it to the wall studs in a tight corner, so they can't tip it and get any leverage on the pry bars.

Lock up any abrasive cutting saws in the safe too.

They are right.  Stack-on makes metal gun cabinets. Which are far better than the old wooden and glass gun cabinets, but they are not gun safes.  I went through the progressions.  Wooden/glass cabinet, then metal cabinet, then a 32 gun safe, now a 64 gun safe.

Give me a 32 inch crow bar and about 2 minutes and I could get into a metal gun cabinet.  Vs about 2 seconds into a wood/glass one and about 45 minutes into a safe, but I'd have to use other tools to do it, not just a crowbar.

Most burglars are neighbor kids.  If you get hit by a "professional" burglar you won't keep them out regardless of the safe.  Just don't advertise that you've got millions and the "professionals" will leave you alone.

*I say most, but obviously there are exceptions to every rule.

I complete agree about the cost and quality of the safe however I don't have a basement or great area other than a closet to put a safe in at the moment.   One of these would be better than the wood display case my long guns are currently located in.

I guess I don't "have to have one" but was just debating on if it would be worth picking up either safe for that price.  There is nothing but a older Remington for $500 listed on Craigslist at the moment.

The 16 gun is fireproof and weighs 300lbs and the 24 gun is fireproof and 420lbs.

I have a safe with nothing in it.  Always confuses the people trying to rob my house.

Seriously though, go with the bigger one.  You never realize what you can fit in a safe until you buy one and it is not big enough.

Fire lined or not?
Years ago fire lined gun safes were bad because of

I understand Cannon has the best warranty in the business, at least what I was told.

This one has an electrical receptical inside, along with a plug that will allow you to put a wireless external harddrive inside to back up all your computer files. Pretty neat if you have the need.

OK, thought I knew how to add a link. Someone smarter than me can do it if you want.
