I'm discussing with my employer a Leave of Absence due to having some family and potential legal trouble with my late father's will.  I haven't seen a copy since he passed in December 2009 and his widowed companion hasn't been very forthcoming with a signed copy.

There's been much politicking at work also due to someone thinking I'm overstepping my boundaries.  I work for a FFL and we're a decently sized company.  I'm not mentioning who, as I love doing what I do.  I guess our gunsmith thinks I'm capable of fucking up AR-15s even though I've built dozens myself and am doing all of the ordering of parts and barrels and providing custom upper builds.  I also taught an AR-15 class during our 2nd anniversary and have a good customer base.  My boss understands I want to push to make us a better company at so many different levels and I can't stand waiting on others to get an upper built for someone that should take a day when it takes a few weeks.  I do have a great deal of respect for him as he does know 1911s extremely well but my Operations Manager wants us to be stronger in this area and I aim to make it happen.

It's a tough time right now since I think I should be considering a new company to work for and am about to close on a house and don't need to do this while possibly searching for work for a company my skills can be used effectively in.

All I want to do is take care of my customers when they're buying Colt, Daniel Defense, LMT, LWRC, and other brands we sell.

The other tough part is I'm about to spend $500 of my own money to get a marker for my father's grave as it has sat for nearly 3 years without proper identification.  My family has not offered help and are only bringing the strife between them and my father's ex to my attention.  I've tried to act as peacemaker.  It hasn't been very successful.

I want healing for everybody and progress to be made instead of seeing everyone living in the past.

It fucking sucks.

So––-what do I do?

In a lot of small businesses a leave of absence equals I quit.  You're closing on a house.  You need an income.  And its not at all clear to me why you need a leave to fight your dad's will.  That's what lawyers are for.

Stay at work and retain a probate lawyer.

Everyone has tough times at work man. I'm in a real funk with a project right now. I personally and we the company are doing way more than we should be doing on it. I am working long hours, only seeing my wife when I wake her up getting ready in the morning and the deadline draws nearer. I'd like to walk away from it some days, but that's not an option. Hang in there man.

Unless you're talking about millions of dollars (or whatever amount you think is life altering) then wash your hands of your father's estate. Quitting your job to contest a will is not a good move for the future.

If it's big money then do as others have suggested and hire a lawyer. That's far smarter than trying to DIY.

I guess I fail to see what you can accomplish without a job that you couldn't do while still having a job. This is work for an attorney.
