My wife wants to get a small humidifier in the house because she says its too dry. I personally have no problems and don't see the need.  One of the things that concerns me is that they might cause rust on my guns.  I have a golden rod in the safe already but I am still not crazy about having additional humidity in the air....

So in case I lose this argument with my wife....like most, will I have a problem with my guns rusting.

More humidity in the air is never a good thing for guns.

Get a humidity thermometer for your gun safe or gun room if you are concerned. A small humidifier can greatly increase the humidity of a closed room fairly quickly and would cause rust if used continuously. That being said my son was recently sick and I had the humidifier in our room with the closet (gun room) closed. The humidity seemed to stay out of there as I did not open it. If it was a entire house humidifier then I would really be concerned.

We run a couple of humidifiers during the winter months and I have had no issues with rusting.

Yep.

Just wipe the guns down every month and you will be fine.

Me either.  My nasal passages thank me for running one when the furnace is on.

It could cause an issue, but you can typically adjust the desired humidity.  You just need to find the right level that will be more comfortable without being super humid.

humidity in your house should be less than 55% epa says 25-55%. my garage stays on the high side of that and minor rust is an issue for me. i installed a dehumidifier and maintain it about 50% and the rust issues went away.

regular levels higher than 55% and your risking mold issues.

Obviously humidity causes rust but when I lived in MI and ran the furnace I couldn't even sleep at night without running a humidifier, the air was so dry.

Running a humidifier in the wnter won't be as humid as it naturally is in the summer.

This.

I have a whole house humidifier for winter. Humidity levels never reach above 40%.

A average summer day yields 70-80% RH.

Don't talk to me about humidity I live next to the ocean and a lake. GoldenRod in safe, wipe down every 6 months  have been doing this for 24 years with no problems.

during the winter 35-40% RH is not unhealthy to you or your guns

Have you looked at rust inhibitor bags? These things work like a charm.

I keep my shop which has my safe in it at 35-40..   Which is also around 7% moisture content in wood.

First winter with dehumidifier, so I will see what it drops too though....
