Do ships and submarines have a mental health professional on board in addition to their doctor?
11/6/2012 12:38:03 PM EDT
[#1]
Several, and a couple of hundred lawyers.

Submarines have limited health facilities.

For ships, it depends upon the size of the vessel. I'm pretty sure that large deck amphibs and carriers do, I take this back. I'm now pretty sure they do not.

As always, contact the First Lieutenant to work those blues away!

So what happens when someone completely loses it on a submarine?

You are making the assumption that submariners "have it" in the first place.

Really.  I know one very well, who was a keel plate owner on a boomer..................apparently there is or was a tradition in those that keel plate owners would all touch their penises to the reactor prior to it going operational.

I don't think they would consider themselves professionals, but the XO's usually gets stuck assigned with that task.

I have yet to meet a submariner that didn't kinda weird me out, and I'm pretty off the wall to start with

Keel Plate owner? I think you mean Plank Boners.

I have heard from an Independant Duty Corpsman that in EXTREME cases a boomer will surface to get a guy off that is a danger to himself /others. Subs are going to have an IDC and possibly another junior guy that helps out in medical.

Large ships with large medical departments will have MDs and possibly a psych tech or two.

Carrier sized ships may have them but they are in real short supply in the DoN

What I want to know is, what kind of tranqs they have on spacecraft and the ISS.

As to the OP, the Chaplain is the closest thing you'll find to that on a surface combatant (DDG, CG, etc).  We didn't even have a doctor, per se, just an HMC.

My boss was a reactor officer on a CVN and had to refer someone to the resident shrink, so I'm going with carriers and the occasional large deck amphib.

True the Chiefs will take care of it.  Although sorry but there is no such thing as an "aft torpedo compartment".

Also correct term for the original crew is "plank owner".

I've heard of guys being lifted off for medical things, but not for mental issues.   Haven't heard of anyone really losing it either––other than suicides.  I've heard of a couple guys telling the Chaplain (in port) that they were suicidal––they get pulled from the sub.

We had a Senior Chief (E-8) lose it one underway and threaten to kill the XO. Sedated and confined to the goat locker (Chiefs quarters) till we got back into port.

All we had on board was a corpsman for medical needs.

The Aircraft Carriers have a Psychologist billeted onboard.
Affectionately known as the "PsychO"

The Carrier also has 3 Chaplains, plus the Staff, DESRON and CAG chaplains (usually 6 total).

I would expect the big deck Amphibs, e.g. WASP class, to have similar services.
