| I have been trying to decide what kind of optic I should put on my Smith and Wesson m&p 15. I wanted to put a scope on that had at least 3x zoom. He said I should put on a simple red dot sight. He claims that I you never put a scope on an AR-15 with any kind of zoom because it slows you down too much when in a fire fight, he is a cop and might actually have to use his gun in a tactical situation. The odds are I will never need my AR to clear a house or room. What does the board think I should do? I have a very limited budget right now, no more than $200 for a scope. |

IMHO––I have both, but I think you will really love shooting a red dot.
You can get a good quality red dot for $200, check out SWFA Vortex SPARC Red Dot Sight. Be wary of clones and buy new from a reputable dealer. |
| Personally, I'd go with a red dot. As stated above, yes the military does use magnified optics (4x and 6x ACOGs) on some of their M4's. However, I have found that with a good red dot you can accurately and consistently hit targets out to 400 meters. Sure, it takes a bit of practice and is somewhat difficult at first, but it is more than doable. Also worth noting, if you decide later down the road that you want magnification, you can buy a magnifier for a pretty decent price. Recently I picked up a magnifier with a flip-to-side mount for my M&P-15. Now it's easier than ever to make the longer range shots, but when speed counts I can just flip the magnifier off to the side and use just the red dot. |

i was really excited to get a leu CQ/T at 1-3x. if i had it to do over again, i'd probably either go for a higher magnification of no magnification. i'm drooling over those 1-6x nowadays, but don't have enough loose cash to pick one up. am thinking about going back to irons for a while. that damn leupold is heavy.

I love my Trijicon 1.25-4x Accupoint on a Larue mount. But it is something like a grand rather than the 200 OP has to spend. |

I'd go with irons. A decent scope will set you back more than that. This. Keep and use irons until you can afford a quality optic. I would have to agree. ETA I just picked up a Leupold VX-R 1.25x4 spr patrol and am really liking it so far, the scope and the LT mount set me back about $750.00 |
