When you stack T-111 wood siding do you have to use z-channel (?), or can you just apply caulk or silicon on top of bottom sheet then stack? Will this method last?

Also, would you apply caulk or silicon on the tounge and groove joints or not?

Thx for any help!

If it were on a gable end or had full exposure to the weather I would use the  Z channel just to help ensure that I didn`t have a problem later. If it had a good overhang and  wasn`t on a gable I would think calk would be Okay. I have T-11 on my house that has been on it since 1994 and havent had a problem with it. Just remember it is still a laminate wood like ply wood and weather makes it do strang things.I havea friend that has it on his garage and didn`t use the z channel  his gable ends look really bad. It has buckled and seperated because of moisture . I didn`t use any calk on the vertical t&g and no problems .
It is a great siding and adds a ton of strength to anything that you use it on.

Not a contractor but I have had to deal with T-111.  IMO Z channel is required.
