Just ran across this interesting article on booby trapped ammo by CJ Chivers in the NYT/Obama fan club newsletter

DEIR SONBUL, Syria — The government of Syria, trying to contain a rapidly expanding insurgency, has resorted to one of the dirty tricks of the modern battlefield: salting ammunition supplies of antigovernment fighters with ordnance that explodes inside rebels’ weapons, often wounding and sometimes killing the fighters while destroying many of their hard-found arms.

Link left cold: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/20/world/middleeast/syrian-government-booby-traps-rebels-ammunition.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

Video at the link with the story includes a video of an Iraqi blowing himself up with a booby-trapped mortar provided by us in Iraq. Definitely worth seeing.

At first I thought it was just crappy ammo and crappy rifles but it appears that it is actual explosives meant to disable to rifle and shooter inside the casing and not smokeless powder.

What does this mean for the surplus ammo market? Does the hive think that any of this ammo could ever make it into the US?

I saw something once which mentioned "Bean Pole" or a phrase very close to it. Any validity?

I don't think it'll be an issue here. Its rare in the areas its implemented to begin with. The video sounded like it was against the practice, so I would take it with a grain of salt.

I find it highly unlikely that random Syrian battlefield pickup ammo will make it to the American market.

i've got 3 glocks in .40 and have run almost 10K rounds through the 3 of them, and not one single FTE/FTF...and blowing up is not even close.

How about some exploding arty shells, exploding RPG shells, poisoned bandages & medicine, and laxative laced rations?

Edit

This conflict is like the Nazis and the Commies fighting in WWII...the longer the they kill each other the better the world is for it.

I like how they showed a casing that had already had the bullet pulled for the demonstation. I thought that you weren't able to pick the rounds out from the regular ones. I mean, isn't that the point? Make it so that the shooetrs don't want to fire their guns. I think this is probably propaganda. Particularly where he is stating that we are doing this in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The video in the article shows a iraqi trying to shell US troops. His second shell is rigged to blow in his face, and it does.

In for the exploding RPG rounds.

Or they could just fill them with glitter and bacon.

That would serious fuck with their "Allah snackbar" chants.

He was a Marine infantry officer and a Pullitzer winning war correspondent. Maybe sounding like a badass comes naturally to him?

There's fascinating reading about those operations; Eldest Son, Pole Bean, and Italian Green. John Plaster's books mention it, and much can be found on the web. Although deadly serious, it was comical what our guys were up to.

We ran across some weapons that had the bolt welded shut by ammo. Scuttlebutt abounded but we never got official word on why.

Unless they have a way of identifying it it would seem to be foolish move. like a virus or land mines, that bad ammo does not discriminate between good guys and bad

I have no idea, perhaps powdered magnesium and thermite. It really fucked up the bolt and chamber though, lots of slag

The Syrian insurrection is just like the Iran/Iraq war, we want no one to win, and it to be very long and bloody.

Plus Iran & the Russians, will have to devote money and weapons to propping up the status quo dictator so he & Iran won't be sending rockets and weapons to the Palestinians.

No lose scenario.

Exactly.

More russian output to shit holes other than where our troops are is a good thing.

plus the more russian shit destroyed by each side does us a favor.

I have heard that this^^^^^ combo with 1 or 2 small things more in the mix is a the best way to make really cool paper weights.  I have been out of the 'circle' for some time, and my best sources are dead, so confirmation is going to be 'difficult'.  Several such rounds were among a personal stash of a 'friend' of mine. (seriously, not me)  When he did get robbed, he called the cops, and told them that many of the rifles that were taken were not worthy of firing; although they were functional.  Popo notified area hospitals for BOLO, a few days later...  the calls from the ER came in.  Several welded and destroyed AK types and SKSs were recovered.

No charges against owner filed.
