Quoted: The best band to come out of that scene. True, but in my opinion, that's not saying a lot. The last great rock band to appear on the scene was Guns and Roses. And they didn't last very long. Before them, life was good. Rock and roll was good. But then the stench of grungy shut-in left coast whiners contaminated the whole rock and roll industry and it has still not entirely recovered. Between grunge and rap, rock and roll almost died. It was, at that point, alternating between comatose and heavily sedated, while suffering brain damage from extreme drug abuse and alcoholism. Today's rock is a pale shadow of what it used to be. There are very few bands out there that show any creativity or talent. In part I blame the internet and the ability of bands to publish their own music now, without having to go through the ruthless weeding-out process that was par for the course when you had to have a music company involved if you wanted your music to be published. Back in those days, there were a limited number of record deals available and bands had to compete for them. The ones that sucked got eliminated and only the ones that had something to offer got a deal. Today, the ones that suck publish their shit anyway. They add a lot of meaningless noise to the music scene and it can be hard to find the quality bands. Of which there regrettably few. I swear, most of the modern bands that you've probably heard of today are intimidated by the musicianship demonstrated by AC/DC. Having to learn an entire three chords and a riff, plus actually (maybe) grinding out a solo that says something is too much of a challenge for a lot of modern bands. Hell, forget three chords, how about TWO? Well, I've heard far more than a few one chord drones that some bands actually call their "songs". The state of modern rock is, for the most part, shit. It really is. CJ |

Heh. Saw them open for Van Halen... They had a dedicated bunch of fans that bailed when the AIC set was over. They were dressed all in black even though it was like mid-90s out.
Nobody really knew who they were. Grunge was still pretty new and VH's "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" disc had just come out. The last song AIC played was "man in the box" and that was the only song of theirs that the rest of us knew. Great concert. I only wish that the hair rock/metal bands hadn't been dumped so unceremoniously whe grunge broke. There are some amazing grunge acts that I still revisit from time to time, but hair rock/metal was really the sound of my formative years. |

It really is. CJ As a child of the 70s and 80s (not to mention a guitar player who cut his teeth on the likes of Yngwie, EVH, Randy, SRV, Satch, etc)... I would be inclinded to agree with you. I do agree that the state of [AMERICAN] hard rock/metal is pretty pathetic right now. But the internet is not the root of it and that "weeding-out process" that you referred to was the suits in the recording industry forcing THEIR "artistic" vision down the throats of the bands they'd enslaved. Yes, they hired some MONSTER producers to really polish things up. But they also forced bands to write or play complete garbage that the artists were completely against putting-out. They also forced glam, hair bands with little substance on the public, while leaving truely talented, visionary bands in relative obscurity. The internet bypasses all of that corporate garbage. Yes, the production isn't there with a lot of these amateurs. But in many cases, what's been left is some originality because these younger bands have escaped the record industry woodchipper. I put much of the blame on the death of musicianship (Cobain anyone?) for the sad state of affairs that we have to endure, and THAT TOO must be put upon the record/entertainment industry for taking a younger generation's rebellion against the too-slick, androgenous hair metal bands of the mid-late 80s and completely saturating the music scene with that to the point that it was cool to SUCK at your instrument and write angsty, depressed stupid songs. The grunge scene was Rolling Stone magazines' wet dream and that in and of itself is the worst indictment against it that there could possibly be. |

AIC sucks. One of the only bands, along with Rage that will make me turn a radio station. Retard rock at its worst. I would almost rather listen to Nirvana. As someone who is really picky about the music to which I listen, and as a musician from an entire family of musicians, I'd say that, while you are entitled to your opinion, you're wrong about AIC from a technical and originality postion. They used complex, unique chord progressions, melodies, harmonies, time signatures to make new music that went in a different direction from ordinary, mainstream music of the time. |

They used complex, unique chord progressions, melodies, harmonies, time signatures to make new music that went in a different direction from ordinary, mainstream music of the time. oh... well great! you come from a family of musicians. Wow, and you like AIC and think they are great... Well, since you come from a "family of musicians" I shall change my opinion. Yeah, I don't think so. I play Bass and guitar as well. I understand they may have been competent musicians and have chord progressions that some retard thought sounded correct. But, every time I hear Rooster, I want to punch puppies and kick kittens. It sucks so bad, it leaves my car radio in another dimension. Also, I am not picky about music. I am a huge Blues fan, but I even like Norwegian Death Metal like Enslavement of Beauty, Immortal and blues like Robert Johnson or The Paladins. I like Roy Clarke as well as Chet Atkins. I also like Metal, Hard Rock, and even some pop. |

Their Unplugged Album is was epically epic. Their blend of rock is timeless.
I consider myself of fan of rock music and listening to Octane on Sirius/XM is torture. There are a few bands that are talented, Volbeat comes to mind (if you can get past the annoying singer), but they are really just doing a fantastic imitation of things that were done 20 years ago, just with better production quality. |
