I think he knew what he was doing, and expected another land before India. That was just his sales pitch to get the funds to sail. If you were an explorer wanting to get money for a voyage, would you try to convince a king there was an unknown land somewhere out there, or would you tell him he could cut in on some business by establishing another trade route to a rich land (India)? |
