Let's assume that political ideologies in the US continue to split until our single government becomes too dysfunctional to even pretend to operate as a single entity. (Feels like we're already there sometimes...)

If there was a peaceful process by which we could break down the US into smaller, more manageable nations, how would you divide it up?

I think I'd go with something like this:

The areas in purple, yellow, and red would be separate nations.

New England would likely become some kind of socialist democracy.

California would continue to be California, only they wouldn't have little details like the Constitution to hold them back.

The bulk of the states in yellow would revert back to a Constitution-based nation.

The area in green is a tossup. It could join New England, or it could stay with the bulk of the US.

The grey are would either be taken in whole by the group in yellow, or it'd be split with Washington.

Washington is a tough one to call. Under this model, it's too isolated to join a like-minded political body. It could be an independent nation state, or it could maybe be split Canuckistan.

Hawaii would likely be best served by staying independent.

We could solve many of the problems in this country if most major metropolitan areas and some of their suburbs became their own city-states.

Mason-Dixon line FTW. We've already done that shit though, it seems States can't do that unless they have access to nucular weapons. Tactical nukes won't cut it. SO, unless Alerbamer starts buying yellow cake, i ain't gonna happen.

Don't do that to NH. We'll deport all the liberal Massholes and become our own nation.

We wouldn't be a swing state if they weren't fleeing their own mess in droves. We'd be a solid red state otherwise.

I came to post this, but in reality, it's just northern IL that's the problem.  So. IL is full of rednecks, and I like rednecks.

As a Washingtonian, I have to say you are half right. Split it at the Cascades and add the eastern portion to the yellow.

What to do with the wetside, I have no idea. I am originally from California. My guess is that most wetsiders would probably head to California or Vancouver (the Canadian one) and it would end up nothing but people like me, who would rather die than go anywhere else, or the drysiders would enslave us and make us provide them with extra water or something. Western WA would definetly be odd duck.

Like many folks, you have this notion that all of northern IL appreciates the wisdom that emanates from Chicago City Hall.

You would be mistaken, despite the fact that IL has long been broken into north or south of I80.

And likewise for our brethern in the cheddarland who don't share the Marxist ideology of Madison or Milwaukee.

In by slightly intoxicated state this is what I will would do. Any municipality over the population of 2,000,000 becomes its own city-state. They will subjected to federal taxes, the draft and same protections that is offered to U.S territories. But are allowed to operate outside the state constitutions and set there own laws and tax rates outside the state but have no state services and therefore pay nothing to the state.. They cant vote in presidential elections but are allowed 1 representatives in the house per 1,000,000 people.

I think sucking the borders in 75 miles from every ocean/gulf/great lake/international border and creating a nation inside that would solve several problems. Except for the unpopulated areas on the coast. We could keep those.

Seems like a fun pointless exercise.

Here's my map:

Red:  The great Republic of Texazona (or maybe Arizexas).  Yes, we're taking Colorado. By force if necessary...what can I say, I like Colorado.   I went ahead and added Oklahoma because a state that didn't let a single county go for Obama in 08 can't be ALL bad.

Black:  The Mormon Federation.  They'll pour out of Utah and clean the scourge of the desert known as Sin City, to build a new Temple there instead.

Purple: The New California People's Republic.  A leftist shithole, though the scenery is nice.

Brown:  The Plains Confederation.  These folks will mostly just keep to themselves and do what they've always done.  Work hard and ignore the coasts.

Green:  The New Confederacy.   Pretty much like the old Confederacy, it will have lousy, weak Nat'l govt (which is good)...but less slaves this time.

Blue:  The Peoples Republic of People who Know Better than You.   1/3 of them will be industrious hard working folks and do well for themselves.  1/3 will be refugees from other places that buy in the lie that the North East is the only region in the country worth a shit.  The other 1/3 will be busy proclaiming to everyone how awesome the Northeast is and laughing at the other nations, while continuing to sink into a quagmire of failed leftist policies.  But they'll get it right this time, because they're smarter than you.
