Wife wants to get me a tablet for Christmas.  Not phone compatible since we can't get cell phone service where we live.  WiFi yes.  Don't want to spend much over $400.  Basically going to use it for Internet and email when away from home.  A few years back I bought her a Samsung Galaxy which she still loves.

What advise for my usage and priceline?

Just picked up a Nexus 7 this week and love it. They don't have a USB or HDMI out option so if that is a consideration be advised. I've played with all manner of Android based tablets and never cared for them. Nexus 7 with jellybean is great. Google's implementation of cloud services is so far beyond Apple it's laughable.

We have two iPads at home and have been using them since v1. Also have used an iphone for the last 4 years or so. I mention this only to point out that I'm not a disciple for either brand.

the new fire HD looks nice. havent had a chance to play with one though. my advice, go play with as many as you can. i picked up a HP touchpad last year and its nice for what it is but now i find it a little to large to carry to work so i just carry my laptop. best buy and even walmart usually have tablets out on display that you can play with. WM no longer carries the kindels though.

I got a Kindle Fire HD last month and I like it.  Internet can be a little squirrelly at times buts overall it’s very nice.

If you are looking at 7" tablets, make sure you look at the galaxy Tab 2 7" (Posted from one)

Give the Asus Transformer a look. I've had mine for about a month and don't miss my laptop at all.

The Nexus 7 is a damn good little tablet.  I'm very happy with mine.

The missus and I both use BlackBerry Playbooks every day.
Very good hardware and can run many android apps as well as the native BB apps.
7" screens, solid 8 hours of battery.

Should be some new Windows based tablets out in the near future, might check into those also.
