To start, I completed the class for my CCW, but due to the fact I will be moving out of state next month, there is not enough time to finish the process and get my permit. That being said, Overland Park, where I live and work, recently overturned their open carry ban, leaving Open Carry as my only legal option.
My weekend job at a liquor store did not make me sign a weapons clause, and has no signs posted forbidding the carry of weapons. My boss advised me that I should not open carry, as they, now i will directly cite her text message "don't want open weapons in the store for customer safety and comfort. They aren't necessary in our store and won't be allowed. plus, I tend to make people mad sometimes. I feel better if they don't happen to have a gun on their hip when that happens." My plan is to be open carrying when I go into work tomorrow. What kind of ramifications can I expect, after the boss told me not to via text, despite the fact that I have the law on my side. Can I file any sort of claim against the company, or is her word via text legally enough to disarm me? If that's the case, fuck that place, I'm moving in a few weeks. To all Open Carry haters, shove it. This is my only legal option for carrying outside my home right now, and I would like to exercise it. |

My understanding is that the liquor store is private property and if the owner has told you that they don't want you open carrying, that's grounds for termination.
Why don't you ask your employer if they can give you permission to carry concealed in their store? If you have permission from the property owner then carrying concealed without a permit is fine. |

If they were to do so because I carry a gun, and refuse to return without it, would that be considered a resignation, or being fired? |

I would not do it.
CC. Concealed means concealed. People at work know I like guns but nobody knows I carry. Just make sure it doesn't print when you work. Because I'm doing a lot of physical projects and with our dress code the only way I can carry is in a RVG2. |

Seems the boss wrote this. |

My manager has met the actual owner one time. We are owned by a trading corporation with numerous businesses. The liquor store I work at is physically attached to a gas station. The general manager in the area carries a concealed weapon (despite not having a permit), and has been seen numerous times by employees open carrying, prior to OP reversing their open carry ban. If they were to target me, he would also be in violation of the law. |

She's a convicted felon for fraud, computer forgery, and theft. I also wonder how a felon can legally manage a liquor stores operations. |

If you could CC I would do it without saying anything. CC is Concealed. If you must OC. Then you need to talk to the boss. If it's ok with him then do it. If not, don't. But you must say something. It's a simple fact of respect for them, the employer. I asked my direct boss, who is a felon and doesn't like guns. The GM for our store carries regularly, despite not having a permit. He has open carried in the store as well, despite the fact that at the time he was doing so, open carry was still illegal in our city. Seems fucked up that they could can me for something the GM is doing. The way I understood it in my CCW class, the gun buster signs apply to EVERYONE. |

Can I file any sort of claim against the company? You can file a claim for anything. You will lose if you file a claim over this. Enjoy being unemployed. No worries on that. This is my part time job. My full time job can cover the bills for the next 6 weeks before I move. I did sign a weapons clause at my full time job, so there's no discussion there. |

In my state NO permit is require to conceal carry at your place of business. But it's illegal for me to carry since I work on an Air Force base. Watch yourself at that liquor store - very dangerous. Wow, California doesn't require a permit to carry at work, but they won't give one out to carry in public? WTF? |

There is a line with everything but as far as guns go. I was lazy to write out all the details so sorry for the open statement. |

The GM knows a lot more about the trade area and past history of the store than you do at this point, and if he is carrying regularly, I doubt it is just because he likes the extra weight on his belt. Just sayin. |

If I lose this job, it will mean a more flexible work schedule at my full time job. At this point, I would love that, as I could greatly use the extra time to work out a better schedule to train a replacement at my full time job. This job has always been about having extra money to go out and do fun shit outside of work. I don't need the income, but I do like the discount on my booze. |

their place their rules This bears repeating. Open carry, get fired, and find a new job. Or don't. whatever With no signs posted banning it, and no weapons clause signed when I was hired, how can they change the rules on their fancy. The GM does it, so why do I as a lowly clerk not have the same protection? I have already told my boss that if she continues with her plan to post the signage banning carry that the GM would be committing a Class A misdemeanor every time he brings his gun to work. |

If as a result of this discussion you learn that his policy is that he will protect himself, but he will not allow his employees to do the same, then refer back to the Johnny Paycheck song I referenced above. /thread. |

I never walk out my door without a gun, even though I don't need a permit to ccw I have one, plus the legality to oc within the state. With that said, every time I get on a plane for work, the rules are no guns, alcohol, or drugs allowed. Their rules, but I like being employed.

The first rule of fight club.... there is no fight club.
We dont talk about fight club. Keep your mouth shut, do your job, and nobody needs to know. .Wearing a billboard around the liquor store, declaring that you are armed in direct contravention of bosses instructions sounds ill-advised. Unless you want to get shit-canned. |
| Her place her rules, if you open carry she will most likely tell you never to return, if you don't leave in some states you will get silver bracelets. Personally I feel safer when store owners and employees carry, because it lets me know that they take my life and safety seriously. Each to their own I guess. |

how did it turn out? Gun buster signs were in place when I showed up, so I informed her I had to go home to lock up my pistol. Ended up making me 30 minutes late, and the GM was in later in the day, so I talked to him about how those signs make it illegal for even him to carry in the store. He was not aware of that, and is now looking at how to get in touch with corporate to have them removed. Probably won't be done before I move, but at least I'm helping eliminate my store as a shooting range for the mentally deranged, I mean gun free zone. I also gave my 2 weeks notice. No sense making myself look bad. |

well In my state they can put up those signs and kick people out if they dont follow them. their place their rules. However it is not breaking the law because its not a private residence, federal building, secure facility..
Here is a link to utahs code and laws. I would encourage you too look up yours. |
