That is all. |

Do you know of any other spreadsheet software that is better? No, I don't. I still hate it. It's just one of those things I fail to grasp. Powerpoint was easy, so was Word and creating flyers. This is all for college, btw. Excel just makes me frustrated untill I say fuck it and have to put it down for a few. |

From the replys so far, it sounds like there are already lots of people in this thread that could probably give you some good tips to make your job easier if you explain what you are trying to do. |

Excel will do amazing things if you know how to use it properly. go take a couple of classes. an advanced class that teaches you how to write code for excel will let you do things you wouldn't believe.
that is if you have a need for that much in depth usage of it. |

We 'upgraded' to Excel 2010. How do I write instructions to tell someone to insert a worksheet, when that's 'on the ribbon'?! No more dropdown menu option for that. /grrr/
OP, you just have to practice using it. Practice, when you get paid for it, is called 'work'. Or so I hear. |

The assighnment is an Annual Revenue Worksheet. Have to make two boxs, one with numbers for revenue, another for a bar chart explaining the numbers. I'd appreciate any help. I'm completely lost. |

Okay, so you have several different sources of income right? The way I would set it up is to put these running down the "left" side of your spreadsheat (I say left, but it could be anywhere on the page, once you put it in though it becomes the left side of this part). Then have your months running across the top, like so: .....................Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec totals chili sales 9mm ammo 45 ammo Setting up your worksheet to where it organizes your stuff in a way you can see it easily is the first step. On the right track so far? Or did I misunderstand what you are needing? |

If the figures will always be in a fixed set area, then use the pivot chart wizard, select the data range and select bar chart as the style.
Depending on which version of excel you are using will depend where the wizard - if it's 2010 it should be on the ribbon. |

Oh, sorry to tell you this, but your the problem, not excel. Sure, it has its problems (like why can't I do a 3-d surface plot?), but Its one of the most useful programs on my computer. ETA::Put it this way, since I started my masters degree coming up on a decade ago, graduated, got a job, and then came back to do my PhD, I'd say scarcely a day has gone by that I have not used Excel in some form or another. I am positive that a week hasn't gone by without me using it. ![]() |

Quoted: I prefer Open Office. Meh, I had it on my old computer, didn't like it...ponied up and bought MS Office. Actually, IRRC I was trying to edit a paper that I co-authored and because I had open office it was causing problems...thus the lead author submitted the paper to the journal WITHOUT MY EDITs. Since his first language wasn't english, it was pretty bad. Knowing what was submitted, I'm sort of surprised it was even accepted....I guess the scientific content was just too good not to publish.![]() When I found out about it I went out and bought excel, re-edited the paper, and then submitted the revised copy to the journal when the time for revisions came. ![]() |

In my experience, most people who "hate" excel are trying to use it for something it wasn't really intended to do, or don't understand what it does. Like when you catch the secretary summing rows and columns on her 10 key... ![]() Yep. Excel is terrible for handling large amounts of data or more advanced data analysis. Thats what I use SAS for. |

Quoted: for doing what?Quoted: Do you know of any other spreadsheet software that is better? I hated Matlab for a long time. Then I learned Matlab. Matlab owns excel. Hard to beat the simplicity of a spreadsheet for mundane things. Also don't forget about the portability issue: almost any computer in the business or academic world is going to have excel. not so for matlab. |
Good deal, a template to follow always makes it much easier.
