Interesting little show. About half-way through them. Little odd, but...grew on me after getting through the first couple episodes. .

Yep it was a pretty good show, even though it diverged a bit (sometimes a lot) from the books. I was fairly annoyed when it was cancelled too. The books were better, but that's how it normally goes. Didn't know there were books. I may need to get them There's a lot of them, and they're a LOT better than the show was...and the show was pretty good. Author is a Friend of a Friend..pretty nice guy. |

Read the books This!!! I didn't make it through the first episode of the show. I had read the books first, and the show just didn't match up to my expectations. The novels are fantastic. Star Wars references, sarcastic humor, magic, and gun play. What more could you want? |

The books are that good, eh? On my list then. They're fantastic. If I was going to recommend one series, it would probably be the Dresden Files (or if you haven't read them, the "Game of Thrones" series aka A Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin is good too). If a good buddy hadn't jacked half of them, I'd let you borrow my collection. |

It is really amazing how much Butcher's writing improved over the first few books. Not to say the first one(s) are bad, but they get better and better as he goes along. I enjoyed the show as well, but had to think of it as a completely separate thing from the books.
Gotta love a wizard that will carry a pistol in his pocket for a little "quickdraw magic" |

I have certain expectations from reading the books that the series just fails to deliver upon.

The books are that good, eh? On my list then. If you like reading Sci-Fi at all, then absolutely. Dresden is a gritty character who as the books go on seems more and more like a regular joe with some extraordinary abilities that he works damn hard for. Good thing is the TV series and the books follow a completely different story arc, and one won't spoil the other what so ever. Protip: you can pick up used copies of the series on Amazon on the cheap. |

I guess I gotta be the naysayer guy, eh...? The show was pure shit. That's why it was cancelled.
The books, on the other hand, are phenomenal. "The movie of my life must be really low budget."-Harry Dresden Although the last book, Ghost Story, was a complete shit show. Anybody that thought that turd was a good novel needs to look directly above their heads, 'cause they're swinging on Jim Butcher's nuts. |

Agree on "Ghost Story" too. It was the worst novel of the bunch so far. Still an entertaining read, but not as good as the others. I think he got tired of the format of the previous novels and tried to break out of his usual story/style...and failed miserably. My amateur .02 on the matter anyway. |

I tolerated the show, I was seriously hoping for Toottoot to make an appearance but I remember Butcher talking about how it was like 30 grand per ten seconds to cgi him.
The books are great one of my go to series, for some reason I am getting the feeling one of two things are going to happen in the series soon. He takes over the black staff or gets offered the Merlin. |

Ok, both of you are going on my "list". The book has some problems. But Harry's a Freaking Ghost! You go try being dead for 6 months, and then have to watch what happens to your friends!
I think Changes hit some high notes, in terms of action sequences, and wrapping up story lines. Ghost Story couldn't keep up the same level of action. But that's just my opinion. You two - bah. Ya Oughta Move To Canada! Youtube has lots of videos of Jim Butcher speaking at book signings. He's not a pretentious BS artiste, and seems like a genuinely likable person. So, unless he gets as goofy as LKH, I'll continue to buy his books. And I don't see that happening. Speaking of which - NaNoWriMo is coming up. Either of you two going to try writing 50k words, in November? Remember, if it was that easy to write a BestSellingBook, thousands would be doing it every week! |

I didn't say he was a bad author or that I could write anything better.
Just said that Ghost Story was my least favorite novel of the series. If that somehow offends you that I don't like one book as much as I like others.....

Just said that Ghost Story was my least favorite novel of the series. If that somehow offends you that I don't like one book as much as I like others..... ![]() It Is The Holy Writ of Jim! All Must Tremble Before It! I almost can't re-read Fool Moon, after seeing the TV version. I'd put Changes ahead of that, now. But you still ought to try NaNoWriMo. Just for the experience. {/thread derail off] I do like James Marsters reading the audio books. He really does a nice job. |

The TV show was ok. I think the actor played Dresdens part very well but it felt too much like Charmed to me. It needed to be darker. The books are great and I agree the last one was not that good. The worst part about the books is not having any more to read.... |

Another note about the books: the audiobook versions are great. The only problem is I blazed through them all too quickly and now I am waiting for the new one to come out. Same problem here. I'm waiting for the next installments in about a dozen different series. I need to explore different and new stuff in the meantime. |

I was introduced to the story by the tv show. I liked it and thought it was a shame they canceled it. I started reading the books after the show got canceled, and was hooked Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile I really liked Shogun. And if you haven't read much Heinlien I always recommend his stuff. |

Books are a great read and the audio versions are even better though I'm hoping the blip in narrator continuity for Ghost Story was just that, a blip and Marsters comes back to narrate the final books. From what i gather of various web rumors, the series is going to come to an end sooner rather than later.
If you're looking for something that tide you over, i suggest the audio versions of the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. Not as gritty and moody as the Dresden Files, but fun nevertheless, esp the Oberron character. |

never saw the TV shows... are they like the books? Watching a tall skinny dude get the crap kicked out of him more or less constantly would get old.... ETA: I like the books, but Butcher has painted himself into a serious corner.... Why?He's wiped the slate clean of attachments to his home, his car, his building - the only thing he has left is his friends. And being Winter now, he can't associate with them too much. I think he's preparing for some big a$$kicking of the Black Council. But that's just me. |

I'm not talking about the drop off from Changes to Ghost Story. I think even Butcher thought that novel sucked. That's why he's taking a year off. Get his head straight. |
