[ARCHIVED THREAD] - NFL Replacement Refs (Page 1 of 2)

I'm not a huge pro football fan but I do watch casually just to pass the time when needed. It seems I have heard a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth about the replacement officals (especially tonight, Tirico and Co are ripping them) but everything I have seen is that the calls they are making are largely correct.
Am I mistaken? It does seem as though an awful lot of flags are being thrown, disrupting the "flow" of the game. |

When you're selling the best of the best, you don't throw in turds.
The refs are irreplaceable. They aren't players...they don't owe money on "ice." They might love their extra income, but do you think for one second if the NFL shuts them out completely, they wouldn't be happy to ref D-1 games? They need to give up the idea of a pension unless through injury, and the NFL aka owners need to hurry up and pay these guys. You can't claim safety is your number one priority when the replacements miss 87% of the calls. |
| the game is bigger then them. they have no control over the players. I have seen more scrums in the first 2 weeks of this season then in my whole life put together. they are trying, but thats not good enough. it is just a matter of time until the refs completely blow a last second call that decides a game, that decides if a team gets into the playoffs. |
|
Quoted:
They made a mess of things in the 2 games I watched yesterday (Skins/Rams and Eagles/Ravens). The missed and blown calls were one thing but they were losing control of the players, somebody is going to get injured if this keeps up. What he said. Clueless. |

Worse, my illiterate friend, there may be a bench clearing brawl with the players, given the lack of control the replacements are showing. |

When guys think they can get away with fouls, fouls occur more often. And then they become more blatant. And people get hurt, and/or the outcome of the game is affected. ETA: And, as immediately above, there were lots of times where players were getting into fights or just about ready to. Wait 'til someone's arm goes out taking a swing and hitting a helmet, or someone gets sucker punched. Would those concussions count? |
| Meh.... every year about this time people start harping on how nad the real officials are. The replacements are blowing the same calls the normal officials blow. Being an official is a thankless and shitty job. The replacements are only slightly worse than the regular guys. |

Im pretty sure if you read my post i state that the refs have no control, so you didnt add anything other then calling me illiterate. |

I say these guys are doing the best they can with what they have been handed. Dont blame these guys for the fucked up NFL - ref union issues. It was either this or no football. The regular refs were a bunch of primadonnas big time. Nice to see them get knocked down a peg. |

I agree that you can't be mad at the replacements, but if you're supposed to be the elite league, you should have elite refs. Any real football guy knows that the sport suffers so long as guys that ref High School and middle school games are allowed to ref the NFL. The NFL refs could go do D-1 games on a whim. The NFL can't get good refs anywhere near as easily. |

Quoted: Games grow men play with a ball... forgive me if I don't shed any tears for anyone involved. I make a tame comment about a dame ref who is a slight dish and it is ignored. Not a single wanker making a subtle reference to wanking off. Yes, the superfans are either consummate consumers of professional football. Or pooftas. Still a game so there is much weight with the second |

Quoted:
So, a bunch of union members refuse to cooperate with non-union refs, then a bunch of former union (and probably SAG)announcers all pile on the refs. I don't see any kind of a trend here whatsoever. Obviously you don't follow the sport or the business of the sport. I'm one of the libertarians on the board, and I understand organizing against the organized. |

Quoted: Quoted: The seem to be out of their element. Agreed. Yep. The game administrator had to call down to the field to stop the game because they didn't tack on a penalty on the end of a run (just gave them 5 yards from the line of scrimmage). They are confused and flustered easily. In the end, the calls are largely correct and the mistakes are corrected before the game is continued, but the PACE OF THE GAME IS SOOOOOO FREEEEEEAKKKKING SLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWW. I noticed this on Sunday too. They get things right...eventually...but it slows the game way down. All these challenges and booth reviews get annoying. Screw the union, but I'm not going to be singing the praises of the replacement refs either... |

Give them a little time and you'll never notice the difference. |

1. The replacement refs are learning.
2. The union refs are watching. 3. The games go on. Whilst the union refs watch. 4. Football is a game played by union members, being ref'd by non-union members. 5. Profit, for the non-union owners! More jobs. Isn't that what Obama needs? More ref jobs count, doesn't it?

Meh....It's closer to the old "let them play" football I've seen in many years. I'm actually enjoying the games for a change. If that has to do with replacment refs then I hope they replace them every year. I don't watch to see rules added every year to "protect" the players. Protecting a investment at the expense of the game/fans is more like it.

Wait 'til someone's arm goes out taking a swing and hitting a helmet, or someone gets sucker punched. Would those concussions count? My solutions to some of the brawls would be to start ejecting asses left and right. It will take a week or two for players to figure out these guys mean business and things will settle down. The way some of these coaches cuss the refs on the sidelines should get them booted too. How can you expect the players to keep composed and in control when their head coach/adult supervision is throwing a raving tantrum on the sidelines and calling the refs every name in the book. |
| I be going against the grain here but I think the replacements are doing "ok". No there are not as good as the real refs. but they are doing good enough. The real refs made plenty of mistakes. The only difference, is that it wasn't cool for the announcers to rag on them for it. The real refs affected the outcome of games too. They lost control of the players. There were players that stomped on other players and fights etc. Hell the real refs are the reasons why we have instant replay and now all turnovers are reviewed. |

How mant times did they spot the fucking ball before getting it right? 7! SEVEN times, seven fucking times for one play. Took two full minutes. ![]() |
