Twin turbo, 2.8 liter boxer 6.

God, I loved that car and hated the EPA / DOT.

The 959 is the only car that I am aware of that was put on the equivalent of a non-registered machine gun for autos in the U.S.

I'm not a huge Porsche fan outside of a few older ones, but I always thought that was a particularly beautiful car.  Something elegant in its simplicity... or simple in its elegance, what do I know?

Just curious:  Why GD and not the Car & Bike Forum?

nothing about the 959 was simple

The standard aircooled 911 is pretty straightforward thought.  Perfection in it's simplicity.

I was purely talking looks/aesthetics (again, "elegant and simple" to me, personally, compared to "busier" models), nothing mechanical, etc.

That was, and maybe still is, my favorite dream car.  Two turbos, six speed manual transmission, viscous coupling all-wheel drive, air-cooled block with water-cooled heads, and stunning styling.

I remember reading a write up about the Lancia Delta HF Integrale, that basically described it as a poorman's 959. I looked into having a Delta HF imported into the US...  I couldn't afford either.

I sat in Wayne (of Pelican parts) 1987 (#037, IIRC) 959, not a Paris-Dekar version, but it was/is as close as I will ever get to one.

Not too shabby.

I helped find the parts for and got a turn around Sears Point in John Byrnes 1974 911 Carrera RSR.

As a California Porschephile, I take it you know, or at least know of, Big Al and PartsHeaven?  My first job in high school was working for him 6 months or so after he and Bud Hopkins opened the store in El Cerrito, when it was still called PorscheHeaven.

That car is tongue droopingly awesome.

Interesting tidbit on its history was that it was the first water cooled 911.  Heads were water cooled, block was still air-cooled IIRC.

As nice as all the new computer controlled and designed stuff can be, and the insane capability of that sort of high end gear, it's hard to deny the beauty of simplicity. Those older cars have much more character than their more modern counterparts. And I love aircooled engines I miss my VW Bug, hope to have a nice Karmann Ghia or 911 some day when I have the time, space, and money for it.

A guy in my hood has a silver one. He drives it one or twice a week. Rear plate says 9 FTY 9  Champion Porsche here had a 959 sitting next to a new at the time 996 TT in the showroom. The first thing I noticed was how skinny the steering wheel was compared to the 996 .

Yeah, I gotta agree.

The 959 set the stage for styling that would make some of the most beautiful 911s to ever set tire to earth.

I am also a huge fan of the 95 GT2

Pretty much my dream car given where I was in highschool when I graduated in 95.

My other drooling idiot car was a 95 Mustang Cobra which I just realized and bought about 3 weeks ago.

I saw a 959 replica that hit a tree sideways at 150mph.  scary....both seats were about 12 inches wide (combined)  i lost the fotos...it was back in the 80s

eta: no, I am not wealthy!  my psyco ex bought it for me then took it back.

It brings the lulz, especially with the reflash and downpipes. "Oh shit! Did I just get smoked by a Volvo wagon?!?"
