I just saw a commercial that suggested a Malibu was better than a Toyota.

No wonder the Crybaby-in Chief bailed out/bought GM, they both are lying
sacks of shit that peddle same.

The GM bailout was about bailing out Obammy's union buddies more than anything else. I've always owned GM cars but now I'd buy a KIA before a .gov motors product.

Ride was smoother in the Malibu I rented with many more creature comforts, however the I4 was anemic compared to a comparable Toyota engine. Probably weight had a lot to do with it. I think the Japs are getting a bit behind on interior quality.

Politics aside, anyone that thinks ANY GM product is on par or better than Toyota from a reliability, resale or customer service point of view is just not a serious person. While the current model Malibu *might* offer a better purchased value over the current model Camry; the long-term cost of ownership  is nowhere close, historical data points don't support the GM.

Case in point, the new Jeep Grand Cherokees are a very nice looking package and I'm sure they're much better than my '04 but given my experience with the brand and model those 9 yrs of 'improvement' wouldn't give me a reason to entertain a new model. The only one of the 'Big 3' that is remotely close to parity with Toyota in terms of reliability and low cost of ownership is Ford; and even then that's iffy depending on the model in question.Even *if* GM hadn't been 'bailed out,' bondholders screwed and a very close relationship with the administration I still wouldn't buy one due to their quality and historical performance, (especially in cars.)

Honestly, I wouldn't pass on a cheap used Chevy truck but that's about it.

Stepdad has a '04 Sierra 4x2 that has over 180,000 on it and has been used to haul and tow lots of stuff. That thing still rides great and has tons of power. I wouldn't mind having that truck when he's done with it. I will never buy a brand new GM vehicle though.

How about we interrupt this purse-swinging match with some facts that are actually relevant to the OP.  GM is running ads saying that the new Malibu is somehow better than the Camry.  Here is a lengthy but interesting Forbes article which breaks down Car and Driver's testing of cars in that class, and found that not only is the 2013 Malibu at the bottom of its class, but that it was actually out-scored in the same tests by the previous generation Malibu.  This article was discussed here a few weeks ago.

Also someone defending a product that they sell should be expected.

Obviously that person is biased, you can't expect him to trash his livelihood.

I rode in a 2012 Passat SE TDI on a 40 mile each way freeway trip this weekend, and I was impressed.  It may or may not have been owned by someone posting in this thread.

At one point 47 mpg, in an incredibly comfortable vehicle with great fit and finish, built in Tennessee.  Where's the SD card slot in the Malbu? How about Bluetooth audio? Or 47 mpg?  Can a 5'10" dude cross his legs in the rear seat of a Malibu with the front seat situated for a big and tall person?

Oh...wait.

Thanks for the kind words. I sell mostly used units and brand loyalty is not of a real concern.
That being said, GM,Ford and BMW badges adorn our driveway.
As for Toyota, I simply stated to go take one for a drive and make your own conclusions.
I've owned several over the years, some are good, some not so good. Same thing goes with every auto maker in the world.

After reading some of the challenger forums about the various issues with that vehicle, not suprised. I believe there is a recall on the '11 or '12 model year door handles.
