I am looking at getting a couple of the ECWCS fleece jackets for hunting layering this fall. I saw the new green ones are being surplused really cheap. But they are sized like ACUs and I am wondering how the sizing system works with these. Do you just get the same size fleece as your ACU top or do you go one size up? (If I wear a ML BDU top, do I get a LL fleece?).

The material on these seems different than the black ones. Are they warmer?

Where are you finding them really cheap?  Best I can find is about $50.

For layering I'd go with ACU size and not larger. They seem to run a bit larger than ACU anyhow.

Where are you finding surp?

Bambi season is coming up here as well.

Ebay is not surplus.

They are still a standard "A" item, as part of the Gen III  Extreme cold weather system, which is 7 layers.
They are not an expendable item, and CIF asks for them back.

The old black one was a carry over from the SOF SPEARS system, which was 4 layers.

Well, there is a lot of them there. I take it they are stolen?

Look at the tag. Who made it?

I work at Peckham and have done sewing and quality control on the Gen III jackets.

Now I'm team leader for their recycling operation.

The jackets supposedly run a bit large for their size as they're meant to go over bulky clothes.

Mine isn't on my clothing record. I believe they are expendable now. I got issued mine at 30th AG before BCT.

For the black fleece I wore a size medium.  My BDU size was small regular.  The newer USMC coyote brown which looks identical to the black ones, I wear a size small.  The medium coyote brow ones are much to long for me.  They must have a different sizing now is all I can think.

Same here. It's mine to keep.

On the current gen ECWCS stuff everything is pretty much sized like your ACU stuff. In my case I wear a M/L or M/R (since I'm close enough to the cutoff both work), and all of my gen2 and 3 stuff (though I dont have the whole set) fits as it should and is large enough to allow for the layering the system was designed for. I'm told tht some of the gen 1stuff had issues with being cut too small for the outer layers, but I havent encountered any sizing abnormalities in the gen 3 or gen 2 stuff I have. Be careful if you buy knockoffs, those are sized differently. Usually they run small and short.

If the tag has a .mil contract number be suspicious.

I go one size up since, for some stupid reason, my unit requires it as the outer garment for winter formations.

It is warm if there is absolutely NO wind blowing. If it is windy, forget it.

Yep the wind cuts right through it, I wear L/L ACU tops and bottoms and wear an XL in the fleece so I have room for the smoking jacket under my ACU jacket when it's cooler out. The black fleece is thicker and warmer.

Since I ride the bike through December, I usually end up wearing the silks underneath everything, and have been known to wear the field jacket liner under my ACU top, then toss the fleece on over that...or wear the windbreaker over the fleece minus the field jacket liner...with my orange vest over all, I look like the michelin man riding in to work, but I stay fairly warm.
