I have an obscene amount of DVD's, to the point that I threw away the cases and started putting them into CD binders so I could reclaim some space. Recently I figured I would go a step further and just convert them all, meaning rip them to my hard drive. That makes them more easily portable as well. In the future I am going to build an HTPC so the library is going into it or some sort of NAS box. Anyways on to the issue.

I have used AnyDVD, but upon playback I have issues with the audio and video synching up. I checked the four movies that I have copied thus far and they all have the same issue, fast forward at all and things get wonky. Anyone here with more experience that can tell me what I am doing wrong? Before I invest any more of my time in the project I was hoping for some advice. Ditch AnyDVD for something else?

Below is one of my cases, including my feet and some freedom seeds which arfcom seems to love.

I've generally had great results with the WinX DVD tools from Digiarty (DVD Copy Pro, DVD Ripper Platinum, HD Video Converter Plus). They're not free, but you get very good tools for the price.

The conversion process works with 95%+ of the DVD's that I throw at it. As companies come out with new lock processes, Digiarty creates updates. I have not had any issues with audio/video sync. I have had some DVD's that would not convert correctly, but it usually was a problem with keeping chapters in order, or looping. Some disks are just bastards to work with.

I like being able to convert media file types too. I can take the movies from my server and rip any of them to my iPhone.

Actually, I paid for my movies hence my posting a photo of the movies. Also it is perfectly legal to copy the movies that I own. The only illegal aspect is defeating any copy protection. Some of my movies, the older ones, have no protection. The newer stuff does. That is the only gray area involved. The artists got their pound of flesh out of me already!

I will have to give dvdfab a try I suppose! Thanks!

This!

I use this and they pretty much always work. I have them all ripped to my Win 7 desktop, where I can put them on my iTunes devices, and I can also stream them via DNLA to my DNLA capable devices, such as my tv and blu ray player.

If it does not work on the first try, they have things you can try to get it done, such as playing the DVD using media player long enough to get the title number correct, so you can select the right one out of 90+

This is exactly how I do it.  With dvdfab alone the audio was off on many movies.  The two part process doesn't take any longer and I haven't had a single issue.

See, that's what I was told by someone else! So I get AnyDVD and it does make what appears to be perfect copies. They do work great, unless you want to pause them or maybe fast forward a bit. Then when you hit play the audio is jacked up. Its like watching those old kung fu movies where the guy's mouth is moving but the audio is a second delayed.

It is not stealing to copy content on a DVD that you own for your own private use, it is however a felony to break the encryotion which you need to do in order to copy it.

i use dvdfab to rip an iso of the main movie only.   This saves space by leaving out different resolutions previews etc.   Then i use vlc mediaplayer to play the iso.

The iso also gives me a backup in case the disc is trahed which a 4 year will do occasionally.

That was what motivated me to make a digital copy of everything. The kids have their own DVD player and movies as well, they also manage to destroy discs with amazing ease. They decided to take every DVD from one of my cases and that sealed the deal. I sat down with AnyDVD but upon checking the finished product noticed the previously mentioned problems. I tried changing settings but no joy. I have been working on this all day basically, with not one DVD successfully copied. So I broke down and got dvdfab. It still has a few minutes to go, but I chanced a glance at the preview tab and it looks much better. Fingers crossed!

This is fucked up, but it's faster and easier to torrent them all.

I've been building what some would consider a ridiculous media server, and a convenient way of turning optical stuff down to hard drive has proven unfeasible.

I have a Mac Mini running Ubuntu with three 1TB hard drives plugged into it, streaming via UShare to XBMC on my TV, running on a Raspberry Pi.

I was looking at XBMC for a while when I first decided to build an HTPC. Until then I set up TVersity media server on my desktop and stream through my PS3. The only down side is that some of my digital files will not play via the PS3, and sometimes there is lag which can be annoying.

So far dvdfab is chugging right along, doing an amazing job. 30 minutes to a movie seems to be the average thus far, I am only on movie two. Replay is beautiful, and I got no glitches or errors when I scrolled through the movie both directions.

ETA

I use VLC primarily, but I also tested with WMP.

It also has a lot of neat features like sharpening filters, re-sync ability, subtitle support,

and it ain't fucking finicky and does everything on the fly. Really a good non-irritating player, and it's free.

However, there are several steps that I take before I backup my DVDs.

Handbrake plus VLC. Keep them both updated. I rip every DVD I buy to a 1TB hard drive. Process takes a few hours and they play back flawlessly through FrontRow on the mac mini I have connected to the TV. The 1TB hard drive should store about 500 movies as The rip process spits out a roughly 2GB file.

If you've already bought the movie is it still considered illegal to download a digital copy?  Just a thought.  Irrelevant since they are pushing to make EVERYTHING illegal sooner or later.

I burned my collection to hard drives and run it over a media server.  It took forever.  I use a PS3 for Amazon streaming and WDTV media server for my movies.  No more disks for me.

SInce the DMCA it's illegal to just break the encryption so I it's a safe bet they could sue you.  IRIC it's like 250k per violation, so I just stick with the rip option.

I tried a number of ways and settled on Makemkv, it doesn't compress the files other than ripping out the subtitles and extra languages but there's no difference in playback quality. Every compression type I tried left noticeable reductions in quality like grain, audio sync and jerkiness in slow pan scenes. Hard drives aren't too expensive these days.

Yep, XBMC downloads all the info and fan art as long as you name your files properly. If you get one that it can't find on IMDB then it's just a few clicks to manually update it.

My apologies to the OP for hijacking!

As far as FREE solutions go I've been using DVD Decrypter to rip and Handbrake to encode with great success.

DVD Decrypter is no longer supported, but I've only come across ONE DVD I couldn't rip so far.  Handbrake is great, I use the "high profile" settings and I've never had a problem with audio syncing.  Using the two separate programs takes more time than AnyDVD or DVDFab, but free's a pretty good price.

I don't have the option to use the VLC player (I stream to a PS3 in the living room), but I use it on my PC and it's great!  It really does seem to play just about everything I've thrown at it.

Thanks for the tip on HandBrake.  Converting .AVI from my USB 1TB HD to MP4 on the same portable drive is a mite time-consuming, though.  It took me 4 hours to convert Die Hard 2.  I presume that C: to C: might go a mite quicker...  I'm going to have to work on it.

Going from one drive to the other is fastest, because you can have reading and writing tasked out to separate drives.  Just a tip that might help.
