Starting my new job as a cashier at a grocery chain at 8:00 AM Tuesday, kinda nervous I'm gonna foul something up. Not my dream job by any stretch of the imagination but it's money and money means more guns and gear. Wish me luck. Anyone else starting a new job or recently started a new job? Anyone feel like sharing first day on the job stories? |

I respect that you want to work instead of being on the .Gov dole. A lot of folks here would think that being a cashier is beneath them. Congrats....you will do well. this, alot of people looked down on me as a pizza driver, but I made more money than most of them.

Good luck.
During training, keep your mouth shut, unless you are asking a job related question- then ask many. Do what you're told, and do it better than anyone else. Be friendly and professional, regardless of the dumbass in front of you. Treat each day as an example of why you want to do something better. Make a plan to do something better.... Kudos for getting a job! |

You WILL foul-up, its just a matter of percentages and number of customers. What matters is how you handle the recovery, get the transaction corrected and keeping the customer happy. And there will be customers that are just dicks and you'll never make them happy. Don't take ANY of personally and don't take it home. |

Like the poster above, I commend anyone working over someone willing to sit around on their lazy able bodied asses, collecting money from Uncle Sam. Kudos to the OP, and goodluck with the new job. |

I screwed up running a cash register at a retail job so bad they thought I was stealing and sent some loss prevention lady to check my cash register. I came back and when I found some woman in the cash register I was about to throw a head lock on her when a manager intervened. God I was terrible at that job, met my wife through a guy who worked there though.

I'm coming up on six months at a new job. I am now a System Developer (never had that title before) at a medical IT start-up. I've been doing systems admin work for about 20 years. Now I'm getting paid to write SQL scripts. Kind of strange, but that's where I am. The first couple of months were very insecure, but the company got some new money coming in. Now it seems OK. If I last a full year I can exercise some stock options. A bit risky at my age (54) but I just might go for it. |

You quit?
Yes. It was everyone's first day, just training and a short shift of hands on. After 5 or so hours of orientation/training we were assigned to registers for hands on. I did my shift, told my manager it wasn't for me, and handed in my stuff. It had nothing to do with the company, I just felt like I was having trouble doing what was expected of me. |

You know how people say "it's easier said than done"? Guess what, EVERYTHING is easier said than done. |

Because you better get over it if you're gonna try to make it on your own. |

was a cashier in a grocery store...one of my first jobs
they noticed I had social skills and could count more gooder than the majority of the most... so they put me on a register...as in back when it was funny and odd to see a male doing what was a females job at that point. I was the second male cashier ever...first one was gay...
I thought It would be awesome working night shift with the girls. nope early shift with the old ladies anyways we parted ways when they beat it into us when a scammer came in to call over a manager before they could scam us. manager came over got scammed for $20 out of my register and they considered it my fault and took it out of my check. I quit and told them exactly why. the store owner later tried hiring me back but I had another job 3 days later at the time you could pretty much walk in anywhere and get hired on the spot...times have changed a little bit lol I see you quit...not gonna lie it wasnt for me either but I stuck it out... doesnt get any better than the first day one of the few jobs I could not stand. depressing place to work |
