For the last 2 months my laptop has been constantly freezing up and giving "Windows Explorer is not responding" messages when opening My Pictures folders( and many similar programs). Even running programs like Windows DVD Maker cause it to crap out. The issue just started out of the blue. Is there an easy fix to this? Spybot S&D and Mal-warebytes say I am clear of viruses.

I'm and getting close to backing the hard drive up to my external and giving the laptop a free ride out the window tomorrow morning.

what OS?

if vista or 7 from an elevated command prompt(right click cmd.exe and run as administrator)

run  chkdsk /r

then when that is finished(20-50min)

Run sfc /scannow (5-10 min)

Yes, it is a Vista.

I read about the sfc/scannow on the Microsoft support forums that it messed up some people's PC's. What does it do?

unlike XP,  windows vista and 7 copy the core operating system file library to the hard drive on install and leaves them there.  They are stored in a .wim file.  What sfc, system file checker, does is open up that library and compares the installed core componants to the originals in the .wim file and if one of them is corrupt it extracts the good file from the .wim and replaces the corrupt one.

Okay I ran the scan and then went to sleep. When I got up and checked the laptop it was in sleep mode. I logged in and there was no pop ups showing the scan results. I assume that is a good sign?

Sorry about that.. copy cbs.log to your desktop then use notepad to view it.  that directory it is in is "protected" by windows.

Has your computer been behaving at all at least?

Okay the log was VERY VERY long so here is the first page. I looked over the whole log and found no errors listed. I still get the freeze up when starting most programs.

The next thing to try is a repair install.

Most laptops have the windows re-install built into a section of the hard drive.  You access it by hitting one of the F keys on bootup.  It will reinstall windows over the original install without wiping the PC, leaving all your installed programs and files alone.

IIRC last time I did a reinstall on my laptop that way it did wipe it. Mine is a Dell, could there be a different setting for it?

It might be called an upgrade install.  I will have to look into dell laptop specifics.
