Are so called 'smart' guns the next push for the anti gun crowd?

I know New Jersey passed a law mandating them (but exempting the police).

I just googled smart guns, sounds like nice concept that falls flat when it encounters reality.

I don't even like it in concept. What if I am incapacitated and a family member needs to take my gun to continue the fight? SHTF?  I don't like it.

There was a big push in the 90s to force the gun manufacturers to include smart gun features.  Smith & Wesson agreed to do this prior to being bought out by another company:

http://clinton4.nara.gov/WH/New/html/20000317_2.html

Smart guns. Two percent of annual firearms revenues will be dedicated to the development of authorized user technology that can limit a gun’s use to its proper owner. Authorized user technology will be included in all new firearm models within 36 months.

EDIT: Seriously though, it sounds like a cool concept. I'd love to know that my own guns couldn't be used against me. On the other hand, the technology doesn't exist to do it reliably. If one of these anti-gun groups wants to spend the money to develop a cost-effective smartgun, I'm sure it would become vary popular with law enforcement.

Here's another consideration about "smart guns".

How will they work if we ever get hit by an EMP?

Or, for the more paranoid types, will they work at all if the government devises a way to send out a jamming pulse?

I got excited thinking somebody was marketing these (the smartgun from Aliens) for a second.

If you read the Colonial Marines Technical Manual (which I have a copy of) those things are freaking bad-ass. They have a full blown FCS that actively aides in aiming the weapon, and will actually network multiple smartguns together if they are in close proximity to maximize coverage of fire arcs and targets.

They didn't work for shit on the Xeno's initially as the Marines had them keyed for IR tracking, and Xenos are generally ambient temp. Once they switched over to motion, they were ripping shit up.

The concept is cool, but reality is harsh.

Not a good idea. Unless they were EMP resistant, had non-degenerating power, could be configured to authorize multiple users, and self contained. (ie. Couldn't be disabled by an outside source.)

Even still, current firearms are superior.

The only real instance where this technology would be advantageous, would be for LE use in the event that their sidearm is taken from the officer.
Not a good idea for military or every day people... Unless the prior requirements were met.

It may not be relevant for range/competition/zombie use, but the LE use case would apply equally well to a HD or carry gun.

This.
I keep hearing (from libs) how great these would be... a RFID chipped ring the authorized user wears.  What happens when one must shoot off hand unsupported?
Interesting theory, probably not good in practice.

I like my dumb guns.
