My hard drive crashed on my Dell laptop - error code 0142. I know I need to replace the hard drive. But, I'm planning on just getting a brand new laptop instead of screwing with my old, tired Dell. My issue is extracting the files from my dead hard drive...any way to do this? Also, if I reinstall the OS will this wipe out all my files or, can I launch in safe mode and the files still be present?

Thanks in advance!

It looks like that code says that the drive is still there just not happy.  It is possible to extract the data off, but doing so often isn't for an amateur.

The best bet is to get your new laptop.  Then buy an external case for your old hard drive and see if you can read any of the files.  If not, you'll probably need someone with special software.

You can get a USB adapter for it and connect it to a PC or your new laptop.

Cheapest thing is to get an external enclosure and plug it into (via USB more than likely) your new laptop or another computer.

Depending on what "crash" means you might not get anything off it.

Depending on what options you choose during the OS install you could wipe your entire drive. This of course is dependent on what "crash" means again if it is even a possibility.

I would actually suggest an enclosure so he can get some use out of the drive later. Like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392032

ETA: FWIW I've fixed "error code 0142" several times with a "chkdsk /r"

I've got a couple old hard-drives in these. Works great.
