| get full of nice juicy fat and protein if all they eat is grass all day long? |
|
Growing up in Kansas I can tell you that it just looks like the cows are eating grass. What they are really doing is rooting in the ground, pulling up grass, searching for tasty insects and grubs. I never understood why people continue to believe that cows eat grass..... ![]() |

Hey guys... it was a serious question!
I mean, why do we, as humans, need to eat a "balance" diet of meat, fats, carbs, nutrients, vitamins, etc if you can get a perfectly healthy and rather large animal like a cow? For all you "paleo" diet guys out there, why can't we just eat arugula from the white house garden and get fat and full of muscle like cows? |
|
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein#Cellular_functions
"Most microorganisms and plants can biosynthesize all 20 standard amino acids, while animals (including humans) must obtain some of the amino acids from the diet." "Proteins are assembled from amino acids using information encoded in genes." It's been a while since I took biology, but that is the simple answer. |

Moo Cows are herbivore and don't need meat. It is just how God, Mother Nature, Darwin, take your pick, made things. |

Cows have a chambered anaerobic refinery inside them that allows them to eat grasses and cellulose products.
This breaks down "inedible" food sources into digestible starches, fibers and proteins. The large portion of foodsource for the cow is the digestive bacteria itself as well as the amino acid, starch soup they're in. So, cows eat the grass > bacteria digests the grass > cow digests the bactera > you eat the cow > grass eats your waste. |

We are just healthier with a balanced diet (and what that balance exactly is is an open debate). Cows and people have evolved differently so that our chemistry maximizes our regular food source. Cows bodies are designed to eat grass; ours isn't. |

What the...I don't don't even.... ![]() The early cow gets the worm. |
| Cattle belong to a class of animals called ruminants. The microorganisms in their digestive system are very essential to their diet. They not only break down the food the cattle eat and turn it into what is essentially sugar and fat, but when the microorganisms die, the cows digest their remains as a large source of protein. |
